The Huskies (22-5) earned the right to host the final four weekend by winning the Eastern Division title. It has won the divisional, regular season championship in three straight years and is hosting the PSAC Final Four for the second time in the last three years.
Bloomsburg is searching for its second PSAC Championship in school history. It won the conference title in 1992 with a 30-point, 70-40 victory over Edinboro in which it finished the season with an overall record of 22-8.
The Huskies are on a season-high, seven-game winning streak in which they have held opponents to 58 points or less. Six of the seven wins were by double-digits.
BU defeated Edinboro (22-5) in the only matchup of the season by 25 points (84-59) at Nelson Field House. Friday night's game is a rematch of last year's PSAC Championship game in which Edinboro won its third title in school history with a 74-58 victory. The Huskies are 1-3 vs. Edinboro in the PSAC tournament with their sole win coming in the 1992 championship game (70-40).
Bloomsburg is making its 24th appearance in the PSAC tournament and fourth in a row. It holds an overall record of 11-22 in the PSAC playoffs and just 2-12 in the semifinals. However, the Huskies always feel confident playing in front of their home crowd at Nelson Field House. Since the 2010-11 season, Bloomsburg holds an impressive 36-7 record on its home floor, an 83.72 winning percentage.
Looking at the national stage, the Huskies moved up one spot and are ranked seventh in the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional rankings. The NCAA will release its full 64-team tournament field on Sunday, March 10 at 10:00 p.m.
Bloomsburg got to this point by placing four players in double figures as it rolled to an 81-52 win over Kutztown in a PSAC Quarterfinal playoff game on Wednesday night. Catherine Noack scored BU's first 12 points, all on three-pointers. She finished with 15 points. The Huskies had three players, Noack,
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) and
Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor), score 15 points each, while
Danielle Derr (Dresner/Upper Dublin) came off the bench to score 12.
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) scored seven points and had seven assists with
Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland/Hazleton Area) scored four and dished out six assists.
Tuesday night, the 18th-ranked Fighting Scots overcame a second half deficit and prevailed, 75-71, over Indiana (PA) to advance into this weekend's conference final four. Kiara Brown ignited the Edinboro offense with a game-high 25 points, adding six steals and six rebounds while handing out four assists. Darche' Jackson netted a season-high 22 points along with seven boards and five assists as well as three steals.
Bloomsburg was recognized with a pair of all-conference honorees Thursday morning as Wieller and Oxenrider were named to the All-PSAC East team. Wieller was named to the first team for the third straight season and is a four-time honoree on the all-conference team. Oxenrider was named to the second team for the second straight year.
As great as the Bloomsburg offense has been this season with leading the PSAC and rating 11th in Division II in scoring at 75.7 per clip, BU's defensive presence has been a game-changer throughout the season and proven to frustrate even the most talented of teams. Bloomsburg leads the PSAC and ranks 10th in Division II in defensive field goal percentage (.334), and is second in the PSAC in scoring defense (57.5).
With a win, Bloomsburg would play in its third championship game in school history including each of the last two seasons.
