Softball Team Drops Pair to West Chester

WEST CHESTER—The Bloomsburg University softball team dropped a pair of one-run games to West Chester losing 4-3 and 5-4 on Saturday.
 
The Huskies jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the opener. With one out Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) singled and went to second on a wild pitch. Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) then homered to left field putting the Huskies up 2-0.
 
West Chester got one run back in the third when Megan Kelly hit a solo homer, then took the lead on a two-run from Jillian Murray in the fourth. The Golden Rams made it 4-2 with a single run in the fifth inning.
 
After being kept off the board since the first inning, the Huskies tried to rally in the seventh. Lea Rehm (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) led off the inning with a homer to close the gap to 4-3. After the next two batters were retired, Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) and McHale followed with singles to put runners at first and second. Fredell struck out though to end the game.
 
In game two the Huskies once again held the early lead going up 1-0 in the top of the first inning when McHale doubled with one out and scored on a single by Fredell.
 
The Golden Rams rallied and scored four times in the second inning banging out six hits in the inning with the big blow a two-run RBI hit from Kelly Anderson.
 
Bloomsburg got one run back in the third inning. Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a single by Rehm. In the fifth inning West Chester's Anderson scored a run to make it a 5-2 lead for West Chester.
 
Bloomsburg would not go quietly in the seventh. Baer led off with a double and went to third on a single by McHale who moved to second on the throw. Fredell then flied out scoring Baer with the Huskies second run. Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) then doubled scoring McHale to close the West Chester lead to a run, 5-4. Kim Murl came on in relief for West Chester and got a ground out to end the game.
 
Bloomsburg falls to 19-9 on the season and will play at Mansfield on Sunday at 1 p.m. West Chester improves to 26-11 with the sweep.
