MANSFIELD—Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the ninth inning to help rally the Bloomsburg University softball team to an 8-5 win over Mansfield University in game one of a doubleheader on Sunday. Mansfield took the nightcap by a score of 8-5.

In game one the Huskies put two runners on base in both the top of the first and second innings, but could not push a run across. Mansfield meanwhile took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first getting a leadoff double from Stephanie Simmeth who later came around to score on a sacrifice fly.

Mansfield added to its lead in the second scoring four times with the big blow coming from Kate Pratt who slammed a three-run homer to grab 5-0 lead. The Huskies got one back in the third when Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) and Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) hit back-to-back doubles.  Bloomsburg made it 5-3 in the fourth Lea Rehm (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) singled and came around to score on a two-run homer by Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone).

The Huskies tied the game in the sixth inning scoring a pair of runs. Loading the bases with two outs, Fredell delivered a two-run single to left making it a 5-5 game.

Mansfield threatened in the seventh and eighth innings putting a runner on in each inning, but Bloomsburg pitcher Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) kept the Mounties of the board.

Finally in the ninth Fredell reached on a fielder's choice followed by a bunt single from Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock). Belko then delivered the go-ahead blast hitting a three-run homer. In Mansfield's last at-bat the Mounties got a two-out double, but Paine got a ground out to end the game.

Fredell finished 3-5 with three RBI, while McHale finished 3-5 and Baer 2-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Paine picked up her 10th year of the win in the circle striking out 11 and moving to within three strikeouts of becoming the school's all-time leader in that category.

In game two with Mansfield leading 1-0 in the third, the Huskies put three consecutive hits together from McHale, Fredell and Yanora with McHale scoring to tie the game. The Moutaineers came back with two runs in the bottom of the third and three more in the fourth and single runs in the fifth and sixth to lead 8-1 going to the seventh.

In the seventh the Huskies rally fell a couple of runs short. Leann Bell (Lanse/West Branch) singled to lead off the inning. After the next two batters were retired, Baer singled with Bell going to third. McHale then delivered an RBI single scoring Bell and making it 8-2. Fredell then walked to load the bases before Yanora doubled to right center to clear the bases. Belko, though, was retired to end the game.

McHale finished 3-4, while Yanora was 2-3 with three RBI for the Huskies. Mandi Black (Huntington Mills/Northwest Area) suffered the loss in the circle.

Bloomsburg goes to 20-10, 6-2 with the split, while Mansfield goes to 17-11, 4-4 in the PSAC. The Huskies host Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
