Softball Team Sweeps Pair from IUP

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HTML Box Score Game One | HTML Box Score Game Two

INDIANA, PA—Pitcher Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) threw a 10-inning complete game two-hitter in the opener and Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) homered twice in game two to lead the Bloomsburg University softball team to a sweep of its doubleheader with Indiana (PA) on Thursday. The Huskies won game one 6-0 and took the nightcap 11-4.

In game one Paine, who has dominated IUP over the last two seasons, continued her hot pitching by holding the home team without a hit till the eighth inning. When Steph Poates singled to lead off the eighth for IUP it snapped a 14-inning streak for Paine in which she did not allow a hit after tossing a no-hitter against Goldey-Beacom College on Wednesday.

Paine, who became the school's all-time leader in career strikeouts on Wednesday, was on top of her game striking out the side in the second and third innings and had two other innings with two strikeouts.

While Paine was holding the IUP bats in check in the opener, Crimson Hawk pitcher Tara Senn was doing the same to the Bloomsburg bats working out of jams on two occasions.

Finally in the 10th inning the Huskies broke through and got on the board. Using the tie-breaking rule, Belko was placed on second to start the inning. After moving to third on a ground out, Belko held a third on a second ground out. Raychelle Kuhns (Williamsport/Loyalsock) then singled in the infield scoring Belko. Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) then followed with a single with Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) delivering an RBI double scoring Kuhns. Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) then singled scoring two runs and giving the Huskies a 4-0 lead. Later in the inning with the bases loaded Belko singled scoring Fredell with Rehm walking to force in the sixth run.

In the bottom of the inning Paine retired the Crimson Hawks in order to earn the win. The lefty finished with 13 strikeouts and just two walks and two hits allowed. Fredell finished 2-5 with two RBI to lead the offense.

In game two, Belko put the Huskies on top with a solo homer in the second inning only to see IUP rally and score four times in the bottom of the second. That would be all the scoring though for IUP.

In the third the Huskies made it 4-3 when Fredell doubled home McHale followed by an RBI single from Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock). The Huskies tied the game in the fourth on Belko's second round tripper of the game, then went ahead for good in the fifth when McHale singled and Fredell doubled to make it 5-4.

Bloomsburg scored four times in the sixth with Yanora delivering a two-run double, while in the seventh Baer got an RBI on a fielder's choice, while McHale had an RBI single.

In the circle Mandi Black (Huntington Mills/Northwest Area) was the recipient of all the run support going the distance and allowing just three hits for the Huskies.
Bloomsburg improves to 24-10, 8-2 in the PSAC Central, and plays at Molloy (NY) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
