BLOOMSBURG—
Caitlin O'Connor (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) pitched a complete game and drove in a run to lead the Bloomsburg University softball team to a 4-3 win and a split of its doubleheader with Lock Haven University on Friday. Lock Haven won the opener 5-1.
In game two the Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when
Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) tripled with two outs and scored on
Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley)'s single to right center.
The score stayed 1-0 despite Lock Haven getting a runner on base in each of the first four innings. In the top of the fifth the Lady Eagles finally broke through getting a leadoff walk from Nikki Weaknecht who then moved to second on a wild pitch. After a bunt moved Weaknecht to third, Weaknecht was out a home on a Brittany Favazza's fielder's choice. Favazza then stole second and scored on a singled by Bridgette Clarke.
The Huskies regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth.
Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) singled to lead off the inning and went to second on a passed ball. After a pop out, O'Connor singled to right field scoring McHale and putting the Huskies back on top.
Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) then reached on an error and
Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) walked to load the bases.
Mandi Black (Huntington Mills/Northwest Area) then delivered a double scoring O'Connor and Belko making it 4-1.
Lock Haven came back and got back two runs in the top of the sixth, but O'Connor got a ground out to leave two runners stranded.
In the seventh inning O'Connor set the Lady Eagles down in order to earn the win, her seventh of the season.
In the opener, Lock Haven jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first taking advantage of two Bloomsburg errors and walk. The Huskies meanwhile were getting bases runners, but could not get the key hit to drive in any runs. Bloomsburg stranded seven runners through the first four innings.
The Huskies finally got on the board in the fifth when Yanora tripled and scored on a single by O'Connor. Bloomsburg later get runners at the corners with two, but Lock Haven got a strikeout to end the inning.
In the sixth Lock Haven took scored a run on an RBI double by Taylor Magee, then added two more runs in the top of the seventh to win 5-1.
For the doubleheader O'Connor went 4-7 with two RBI and a run scored.
Bloomsburg goes to 17-5, 3-1 in the PSAC Central. Lock Haven goes to 14-5, 1-1 in the PSAC Central. The Huskies host California (PA) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
