SHIPPENSBURG—The 2013 Bloomsburg University softball season came to an end on Sunday with a 4-0 loss to Kutztown University in the NCAA Atlantic Regional playoffs held at Shippensburg University.

The Huskies, who reached the title round with a 6-2 win over West Virginia State earlier in the day, finish the season with a record of 32-19.

After senior Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) threw a complete game in the win over West Virginia State, the Huskies went with junior Mandi Black (Huntington Mills/Northwest Area) in the circle against Kutztown.

Black was outstanding allowing no-hits and just two walks through the first four innings. In the top half of the fifth Kutztown's Bri Knipe broke up the no-hitter with a one out double. But Black got a pop up and a strike out to end the threat.

Meanwhile, Kutztown pitcher Dominique Ficara was not as sharp, but was keeping the Huskies off the board.

Bloomsburg had two hits in the first and second innings, but could not plate a run. In the second the Huskies had runners at second and third with one out, but Ficara got the next two batters to keep it 0-0.

In the sixth inning Kutztown got a leadoff double from Jackie Hetzler, who moved to third on a bunt. But Black got some help from her defense when Raychelle Kuhns (Williamsport/Loyalsock) threw out Hetzler who tried to score on a fly out.

In extra innings neither team could score in the eigth. But in the ninth Kutztown finally broke through with four runs on five hits. Katie Lynch, Colleen Smith, Maria Isgro and Lindsey Kelley all drove in a run for

Bloomsburg did not go quietly in the bottom of the ninth. After the first two batters were retired, Kuhns singled to right field followed by an infield single from Lea Rehm (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) with Kuhns taking third on a throwing error. Mandi Bear though grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.

Black took the loss allowing three runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

In the opener it was a pitchers duel in the early going between Bloomsburg's Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) and West Virginia State's Anna Eggleston. Paine allowed just two singles through the first four innings with Eggleston even better as the Yellow Jacket pitcher was perfect through four innings.

In the bottom of the fifth the Huskies' Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) got the first hit for Bloomsburg with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error. After a strikeout, Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) singled to left putting runners at the corners. Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) then followed with a double scoring Yanora and moving Moir to third. Raychelle Kuhns (Williamsport/Loyalsock) then singled scoring Moir and putting runners at first and third for the second time in the inning. Lea Rehm (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) then flied out to center scoring Belko for a 3-0 Huskies lead.

The Huskies tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) singled to lead off the inning and chase Eggleston. After a bunt moved McHale to second, Yanora delivered an RBI single and moved to second on the throw home. Caitlin O'Connor (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) then singled past first base with Yanora racing around to score and making it 5-0. O'Connor would score later in the inning when Kuhns walked with the bases loaded to make it 6-0.

West Virginia State got two runs back in the top of the seventh when Poppy Ramey delivered a two-run single. Paine, however, got a strikeout and ground out to end the game.

Yanora finished 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Kuhns was 1-2 with two RBI. Paine finished with four strikeouts, did not walk anyone and gave up five hits and two runs.
