QUAKERTOWN, Pa. –
Leann Bell (Lanse/West Branch) ripped her second home run of the year with two outs in the fourth inning to lift Bloomsburg to a 3-2 win over No. 7 California (Pa.).
Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) continued to keep opponents at bay, allowing just two hits in the contest and has now allowed only eight hits in 21 innings during the PSAC Tournament and has not walked a batter.
Bloomsburg took a 1-0 lead in the second when
Caitlin O'Connor (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) reached on an error and singles by
Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) and
Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) loaded the bases with no one out.
Lea Rehm (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) fell behind 1-2, but managed to work a bases loaded walk to drive in the game's first run.
Alex Sagl was able to work out of the jam without further damage, however, and the Vulcans answered back in the top of the third. Natalya Smarra led off the inning with a single and two batters later Shelby Lia took the first pitch she saw over the fence in right field to put Cal ahead 2-1.
After that, Paine cruised through the rest of the game. She retired the next two batters to end the inning and did not allow another runner. In all, she retired the final 14 hitters she faced.
The Huskies did not let the California lead last long. Moir doubled with one out in the bottom of the fourth and with two outs, Bell smacked the first pitch of her at bat for Bloomsburg's sixth home run of the tournament.
Paine tossed her third complete game of the tournament, striking out nine for her 17th win of the year.
Moir was the only player on either team with two hits.
Bloomsburg handed the Vulcans just their third loss of 2013 and snapped Cal's seven-game win streak. It also just the second loss of the year for Sagl.
The win gave the Huskies at least 30 victories for the ninth straight season.
With the win, Bloomsburg stays in the winners bracket to face Kutztown on Friday, May 3 at 10 a.m. at Veterans Park.
