BLOOMSBURG – A breakaway goal from Alberto Ruiz of New York Institute of Technology in the 70th minute propelled the visiting Bears to a 2-1 victory over the Bloomsburg University men's soccer team Tuesday afternoon at Sports Stadium.
The victory moves NYIT to 2-0 on the year while Bloomsburg's record evens at 1-1.
NYIT struck in the early going, taking the advantage in the sixth minute. The Bears' Matt DiDonna received a cross from Javier Gallardo and punched in his shot from the right wing for the goal and a 1-0 lead.
Bloomsburg answered later in the half, knotting the score before intermission. Fran Miller (Doylestown/Central Bucks East) worked his way past the NYIT defense and passed ahead to teammate Chris Pawlowski (Philadelphia/LaSalle) who drilled his shot from close range past the Bears' keeper for the tie.
The score remained tied early in the second half when the Huskies appeared primed to take the lead. Bloomsburg created two strong opportunities back-to-back when Miller took a cross from Miguel Diaz (Doylestown/Central Bucks East) on the close left wing in the 57th minute, but his shot was turned away by Bears keeper Liam Waddy. The rebound momentarily left an open net, however, but Spencer Conrad (Enola/East Pennsboro)'s shot hit the post to keep the score tied.
NYIT later broke the deadlock on the breakaway by Ruiz.
Waddy earned the win in net for the Bears while Bernie Roell (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) made seven saves for the Huskies. NYIT held the edge in shots, 12-9, and in corner kicks, 5-3.
The Huskies hit the road again for their next contest as they open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play by taking on PSAC newcomer Seton Hill in Greensburg on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
