SPARKILL, N.Y. – A second-half tally from Spencer Conrad (Enola/East Pennsboro) proved all the offense the Bloomsburg University men's soccer team would need as the Huskies (1-0) held on for a 1-0 victory to open the season at St. Thomas Aquinas (0-1) on Thursday afternoon.

After the two squads fought to a scoreless tie at halftime, Conrad found the spark the Huskies needed early in the second stanza. Conrad took a pass from Anthony Manero (Richboro/Council Rock North) in the 51st minute and did the rest, scoring on a long shot at the top left of the box for the first goal of the 2013 season.

It would turn out to be all the offense the Huskies needed as their defense made the lead stick.

Bloomsburg's defense allowed just nine shots to get through, with only four reaching the net. Goalkeeper Bernie Roell (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) turned away all four shots he faced for the shutout victory in net. It marks the 10th career shutout for the senior, giving Roell fourth place in the Huskies record books by himself after entering the season in a three-way tie for fourth.

The Huskies held the edge in shots, 14-9. Nathan Mangione made five saves for St. Thomas Aquinas.

Bloomsburg opens its home slate by hosting N.Y. Institute of Technology at Sports Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
