BLOOMSBURG – The Bloomsburg women's basketball team trailed for nearly the entire second half on Saturday vs. non-conference Philadelphia University, but rallied from nine down with 5:42 remaining to score a thrilling 85-82 victory while guard
Catherine Noack (Bethlehem/Liberty) became the 20th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.
Bloomsburg improves to 11-3 on the season as non-conference play wraps up while Philadelphia, members of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, had a five-game winning streak snapped and fall to 8-4 overall.
Noack's step-back 3-pointer with 3:25 to play put the senior over 1,000 points and came at a crucial point in the Huskies comeback as part of an 11-0 run to erase the Rams' lead. Two free throws from
Brianna Dudeck (Sugarloaf/Hazleton) following an intentional foul called on the Rams started the rally, drawing the Huskies within seven at 76-69 with 4:31 left. A layup from
Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) completed the comeback, handing the Huskies their first lead of the second half at 78-76 with 2:10 remaining.
Philadelphia U refused to go away, however, quickly tying the game at 78 on free throws from Bria Young and re-took the lead at 80-78 on a layup by Mary Newell.
Ford put the Huskies ahead for good with a 3-pointer for the 81-80 lead and 56 seconds to go. Bloomsburg picked up a stop and
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) brought down a key defensive rebound, leading to a Rams foul. Noack stretched the lead to three on two shots at the line, but the Rams had one last gasp remaining, closing within a point (83-82) on another bucket inside from Newell.
Noack calmly sank two more shots at the line after the Rams were forced to foul with the shot clock turned off. A last-second prayer from Monica Schacker missed the mark, allowing the Huskies to come away with the win.
Three Huskies scored 20 or more points, led by Ford who set yet another new career-high in scoring with 24 points along with six rebounds. Noack was 6-of-10 from the floor including a pair of 3-pointers and 6-of-6 at the line for 20 points while Sadowski also poured in 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field.
Najah Jacobs led all scorers for the Rams with 26 points off the bench and Bria Young added 16.
Both teams shot extremely well from the field. Philadelphia shot over 54 percent during the first half to take a 44-42 lead to intermission, leading by as many as 11 points with 12:32 to play in the second period following a 13-4 sprint over a four and a half minute span early in the half to take control before the Huskies began chipping away.
Bloomsburg finished by shooting 52.5 percent (31-59) while Philadelphia cooled off down the stretch, finishing at just over 36 percent in the second half and 45.5 percent (30-66) for the game.
The Huskies return to action Wednesday night at Nelson Field House when they host East Stroudsburg at 5:30 p.m. as PSAC East play continues.
