BLOOMSBURG – Twelve Huskies recorded points in an all-around effort to begin 2014 as the Bloomsburg women's basketball team opened the new year with a 72-52 victory over visiting Clarion at Nelson Field House on Friday afternoon.

Clarion (4-6) opened up strong as the Huskies (8-3) attempted to shake the rust from a nearly two-week layoff. The Golden Eagles grabbed their largest lead of the game at 11-6 on a layup from Emma Fickel nine minutes in, but a lay-in from Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) and 3-pointer by Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) quickly tied the score.

After a back-and-forth swing over the next six minutes, a bucket inside from Clarion's Hannah Heeter put the Golden Eagles ahead by three at 17-14 with 5:20 left in the opening half. Bloomsburg would then close the first period on a 19-4 run to seize a 33-21 lead at intermission, taking control it would not relinquish the rest of the way.

Clarion moved no closer than 10 points during the second half as the Huskies remained on the gas pedal. A long-range jumper from Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) ignited a 10-0 burst to stretch the lead to 51-30 during the first eight minutes of the half and the Huskies grew their advantage to 27 (67-40) following free throws by Taylor Kaminski (Philadelphia/Archbishop Wood) with 5:42 to play, erasing any doubt.

Ford and Sadowski each tallied 12 points apiece while Brianna Dudeck (Sugarloaf/Hazleton) poured in a season-best 11 points with six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) paced the Huskies on the boards with eight rebounds while Kaminski handed out four of Bloomsburg's 19 assists.

The Huskies warmed up after a cold start, shooting over 47 percent from the floor during the second half and finished at 43.1 percent (28-of-65) for the game while holding Clarion to just 33.3 percent (21-of-63). Bloomsburg also maintained a 43-39 edge in rebounding and forced the Golden Eagles into 23 turnovers which resulted in 20 points of offense for the Huskies.

Heeter was the star for Clarion with a game-high 16 points and 14 rebounds in only 23 minutes.

The Huskies return to action with another home Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover game vs. Pitt-Johnstown Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
