Â
LAST TIME OUT(
Box Score) The Huskies dropped a 2-1 decision on Saturday afternoon at No. 14 Mercyhurst. Bloomsburg got on the board first in just the sixth minute.Â
Mike BamfordÂ
(Doylestown/Central Bucks West)Â started the scoring play with a throw in toÂ
Austin TransueÂ
(Langhorne/Neshaminy)Â who crossed ahead toÂ
Nick Izzo (Frankford, DE/Indian River)Â
(Frankford, DE/Indian River). Izzo finished by beating the Lakers keeper to the upper right of the net for an early 1-0 lead and his third goal of the season.
The advantage was short-lived, however, as the Lakers immediately answered less than two minutes later. Danny Deakin tallied his sixth score of the year unassisted with a strike from 20 yards out for the tie.
Jack Watson's 12th goal of the year would be the difference maker. He took a cross from Sten Marcson in front of the net and was able to find the back of the net at 35:22 for the 2-1 lead.
Â
SCOUTING QUEENSFinding offense has been a struggle at times this season for Queens as the Knights have scored more than one goal just twice out of nine matches thus far – a 4-2 loss at District of Columbia and 3-2 loss to NYIT. After starting the year 0-5, the Knights scored their first win of the year, 2-1, on Oct. 1 at Bridgeport and, following a loss at LIU Post, recorded a 2-1 double overtime win at Saint Anslem last Tuesday. In their last time out, the Knights lost 2-1 to St. Thomas Aquinas. The Huskies and Knights have two like opponents this year – Bloomsburg opened the year with a scoreless tie vs. St. Thomas Aquinas and fell 3-0 at NYIT.
Junior midfielder Pol Narbona leads the offense with four goals for eight total points while fellow junior Glen Reid is the only other player with multiple goals, finding the net twice this year.
A pair of sophomores have seen time in net – James Brostowski has garnered the lion's share of time, starting seven matches with a 1.48 goals against average and 28 saves in over 670 minutes while Robbie Webster has two starts and 156 minutes of action with a 4.03 GAA.
IN THE RANKINGSThe Huskies are ranked fourth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Atlantic Region poll and among others receiving votes in the NSCAA NCAA Division II Top 25.
Â
PSAC STANDINGSBloomsburg continues to be in a three-way tie atop the PSAC standings as the Huskies, Mercyhurst and Lock Haven all have 12 conference points. Mercyhurst and Lock Haven are both 4-1 against PSAC competition while Bloomsburg is 4-2.
Â
SPREADING THE WEALTHNo one player jumps off the Huskies offensive stat sheet for the year, instead numerous Huskies have been instrumental in the offensive success this fall. Four players have either eight or nine points on the season – freshman
Anthony Cerda (Budd Lake, NJ/Mount Olive) and junior
Spencer Conrad (Enola/East Pennsboro) each have four goals and one assist for nine total points while redshirt junior
Nick Izzo (Frankford, DE/Indian River) and junior
Matt Zima (Newtown/Council Rock North) each have three goals and two assists for eight total points. Junior
James Kiama (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) adds three goals for six points.
Â
OTT RISING THROUGH THE RECORD BOOKSFreshman goalkeeper
Jared Ott (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) currently is tied for ninth in school history for shutouts in a season with four. One more shutout would move him into a five-way tie for fifth.
Â
STEADY DEFENSEBloomsburg has surrendered just 11 goals in 11 matches this year – a total that is tied for lowest in the PSAC with West Chester. West Chester, however, has only played nine matches leaving the Huskies' 1.00 goals allowed per game total as the best in the conference.
Â
NEXT UPThe Huskies have a huge weekend on deck as they first travel to Slippery Rock on Friday afternoon – The Rock is just behind the Huskies in the conference standings with nine points entering the week. Then, on Saturday Bloomsburg will make the trip to California (PA) – the Vulcans are looking to stay in the playoff race with six points.
