BLOOMSBURG – Visiting Queens College walked away from Steph Pettit Stadium with a 3-2 overtime victory on Tuesday evening over the Bloomsburg University men's soccer team after a beautiful, spinning kick in front by Aitor Gurruchaga scored the game-winner 4:26 into the extra period.
Â
Gurruchaga took advantage of a deflected ball in front of the box and whirled around to fire past the Huskies keeper and send the visitors home with the win, improving to 3-7 on the year. Bloomsburg drops to 6-4-2 overall.
Â
The Huskies were playing catch up from the early first half as Queens first got on the board in the 16th minute behind a goal from Pol Narbona. Narbona headed it in from eight yards out following a cross off the far right wing by Nicholas Matusewicz.
Â
Bloomsburg nearly tied the match during a three-minute span where the hosts applied a tremendous amount of pressure. At the 31st minute mark, Hamilton Radkey found teammate
Cameron Cleary (Pleasanton, CA/Amador Valley) at the top of the box where Cleary rocketed a shot just to the right of the net.
Â
The threat did not end there as two minutes later Rodkey fired wide right. Seconds later it appeared as though the Huskies had scored when
Kris Gross (Perkasie/Penn Ridge) punched it in the net following a deflected shot by
Samuel Izzo (Frankford, DE/Indian River) in front, but the goal was called off due to an offsides penalty.
Â
The Huskies finally broke through in the 42nd minute when
James Kiama (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) worked himself into a one-on-one on the far right wing near the end line. Kiama beat his defender and passed to Cleary right in front where the freshman was able to beat the Queens keeper to the lower right of the net with his second goal of the year for the 1-1 tie.
Â
Queens grabbed the lead back in the 60th minute when Narbona scored off an assist by Gaurruchaga for the 2-1 advantage.
Â
Rodkey nearly tied it in the 78th minute after a shot by
Brett Milden (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) was saved but deflected out to Rodkey who fired a ball off the post from the top of the box after having the keeper out of position.
Â
Kiama would again figured into the scoring in the 84th minute to tie the match, this time putting the ball in the net himself.Â
Spencer Conrad (Enola/East Pennsboro) crossed into the center of the box where Kiama headed into the upper right of the net above the keeper's extended arm for his fourth goal of the season.
Â
The junior forward nearly ended the match in regulation, but another shot attempt by Kiama was blocked in front 14 seconds before the buzzer.
Â
Huskies goalkeeper
Jared Ott (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) made a strong save in the 91st minute to keep the contest going, recording the stop through heavy traffic in front.
Â
Bloomsburg dominated the next two and a half minutes, nearly tallying the winner when Conrad gathered a pass from
Austin Transue (Langhorne/Neshaminy) and shot just wide of the net.
Â
That set the stage of the heroics of Gurruchaga for the game-winner.
Â
The Huskies came up short despite owning a dominating 18-9 edge in shots and 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Â
Ott made two saves for Bloomsburg while James Brostowski earned the victory with three saves for Queens.
Â
Next up for the Huskies is a pair of PSAC matches as Bloomsburg resumes conference play with a trip to Slippery Rock on Friday before battling California (PA) on the road Saturday.
