SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University men's soccer team registered a key Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) victory on Friday afternoon, 1-0, over Slippery Rock at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
The win moves Bloomsburg to 7-4-2 overall on the season and 5-2-0 in the PSAC while Slippery Rock falls to 7-5-0, 3-3-0.
Bloomsburg picked up the only goal of the match from a familiar source as reigning PSAC men's soccer Athlete of the Week
Spencer Conrad (Enola/East Pennsboro) remained red hot by scoring in the 17th minute and giving the Huskies defense all it needed.
Conrad logged his fifth goal of the season and seventh point of the past week with a header into the net, receiving a cross from teammate
Austin Transue (Langhorne/Neshaminy) and finishing by beating The Rock keeper for the goal.
Slippery Rock managed a 6-4 edge in shots during the first half, but Bloomsburg turned the tables for a 6-3 advantage during the second half to help maintain the lead. The Huskies finished with a 10-9 lead in shots for the contest.
The defense and goalkeeper
Jared Ott (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) made the lead stick. Ott made four saves for his fifth shutout of the year and moves into a tie for fifth place in all-time Huskies history for most in a single season. Ott also took advantage of the strong defense in front of him as the Huskies did not allow a shot attempt from The Rock over the final 19 minutes of action.
Transue recorded a team-high four shots for the Huskies.
The win, Bloomsburg's first over defending PSAC champion Slippery Rock since Sept. 30, 2011, moves the Huskies back into a first-place tie atop the conference standings with Mercyhurst. Both Bloomsburg (5-2 PSAC) and Mercyhurst (5-1 PSAC) own 15 conference points after Friday's play, while Slippery Rock remains in a tie for seventh with nine points.
Next up is a trip to California (PA) on Saturday as the Huskies will seek a weekend conference sweep.
