SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – For much of the season, the Bloomsburg University women's soccer team has been oh-so-close to taking the next step in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), suffering a number of heartbreakers.
Â
On Friday afternoon, the Huskies (6-6-1, 5-6-1 PSAC) put it all together, using a pair of goals from freshman
Michelle Kinka (West Chester/Villa Maria Academy) to fuel a 3-1 upset victory at No. 24 Slippery Rock (8-3-1, 7-3-1 PSAC).
Â
The win gives the Huskies their second triumph over a nationally ranked opponent this season after defeating then-No. 17 Gannon at home last month. It is the first time since the 2010 season that Bloomsburg has defeated multiple nationally ranked opponents in the same year.
Â
The Rock, winners of five straight matches entering Friday and unbeaten at home in PSAC regular season matches for the past two years, got on the board first with a goal in the 16th minute by Ali Brosky. Brosky dribbled around her defender and scored from the top of the box for the early 1-0 lead.
Â
Slippery Rock, the defending Atlantic Region champions, took that 1-0 edge into halftime, but the Huskies quickly scored the equalizer.
Â
Kinka found the back of the net with her first collegiate goal 59 seconds into the second period, stealing a pass at the center of The Rock zone and firing past the keeper for the 1-1 tie.
Â
The two squads were deadlocked until the 76th minute when Kinka struck again. This time the freshman brought in a pass from teammate
Megan Carroll (Middletown/Middletown Area) following a throw-in from
Hannah Miller (El Dorado Hills, CA/Oak Ridge) and shot through traffic in front, beating the keeper to the left of the net for what turned out to be the game-winner.
Â
Kinka continued to put on the pressure in The Rock zone with a header shot in the 79th minute that was saved by SRU goalkeeper Annabelle Hegeman.
Â
Ashley Sanchez (Lyndhurst/DePaul Catholic) gave Bloomsburg some insurance in the 87th minute, all but putting the game on ice after receiving a pass from
Brooke Etter (Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown Area) and scoring to the right of the goal for her second tally of the season.
Â
Bloomsburg goalkeeper
Megan Deak (West Islip, NY/West Islip) made three saves over the final 15 minutes to keep the lead in tact and finished with eight total stops on the afternoon.
Â
The Huskies return to action Saturday afternoon at California (PA) as PSAC play continues.
