BLOOMSBURG—Senior Candice Smith (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove) and sophomore Laura Gerhard (Catasauqua/Catasauqua) each scored one goal and assisted on another to lead the Bloomsburg University field hockey team to a 4-3 win over Mansfield University in a PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) matchup on Saturday.

The game was a back-and-forth affair for most of the first half with Mansfield getting off two shots and the Huskies four in the first 32 minutes of play. In the 33rd minute the Huskies put together a series of penalty corners getting a goal on their third attempt.

On the play Candice Smith (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove) directed the ball out to the top of the circle where Laura Gerhard (Catasauqua/Catasauqua) ended up with the ball on the right side. Gerhard then passed to Smith coming in from the left side who had an easy shot for a shot for a goal making it 1-0 at the break.

The Huskies added to their lead just 5:06 into the second half when Stephanie Halsted (Fairfax Station, VA/South County) fed Gerhard who drilled a shot to the top center of the cage.

Bloomsburg made it 3-0 about 11 minutes later. Nikki Gattone (Reading/Muhlenberg) scored off an assist from Samantha Peters with Gattone's shot going high and to the left in the cage.

Mansfield finally got on the board when Jessi Swingle scored off an assist from Claire Swink on a penalty corner. Swink fed Swingle who drilled a hard shot for a score.

The Huskies made it a three-goal game again in the 61st minute when Smith, outside of the circle, passed the ball inside the circle where Meagen Hill (Gettysburg/Gettysburg) stopped it and drilled a shot to the right side of the cage.

Mansfield trimmed the lead back to two goals about two minutes later. On a penalty corner the Mounties Kayla Grunza took a shot that Emiley Maiorana (Greencastle/Greencastle-Antrim) made a kick save on with her pads.  But Lacey Croasdale was right there to gather the ball in and punch in for the score making it 4-2.

In the 64th minute Swingle scored her second goal of the game making it 4-3. Swingle took a shot that was blocked by Maiorana. Swingle though got the rebound and hit a backhanded shot from the left side of the circle to right side of the cage.

The Huskies though would allow just one more shot on goal as they picked up their third win of the season.

Bloomsburg is now 3-5, 2-4 in the PSAC, while Mansfield falls to 2-6, 2-4 in the PSAC. The Huskies are back in action on Oct. 11 at East Stroudsburg at 1 p.m.
