BLOOMSBURG – Edinboro's Liz Debo scored in the 103rd minute to give the Fighting Scots a 2-1 win in double overtime over the Bloomsburg University women's soccer team on Wednesday evening at Steph Pettit Stadium.
Â
The win, the sixth in a row for Edinboro, moves the Fighting Scots to 6-4-1 overall and likewise in the PSAC while Bloomsburg now stands at 4-6-1, 3-6-1 PSAC.
Â
Debo handed the Scots a lead in the 32nd minute, scoring when Reilee DuPratt lobbed a long pass from over 25 yards out over the heads of players in front, landing perfectly at the feet of Debo who finished by shooting into the lower right of the net for a 1-0 advantage.
Â
The Huskies' best challenge in the first half came in the 36th minute when
Hannah Miller (El Dorado Hills, CA/Oak Ridge) forced a leaping save from Edinboro keeper Meghan Kelly off a rocket from the top of the box.
Â
Edinboro handled the first half, outshooting Bloomsburg 10-2, but the script was completely flipped after intermission. The Huskies came out of the break as the dominant team, immediately changing the momentum with a number of solid chances.
Â
Taylor Gerstenfield (Warminster/William Tennent) began a strong Huskies attack with a corner kick in the 53rd minute, ultimately leading to a shot from
Megan Carroll (Middletown/Middletown Area) that rocketed off an Edinboro defender in front. The Huskies continued to apply pressure in the offensive zone when
Ashley Sanchez (Lyndhurst/DePaul Catholic) created a great scoring chance, passing to Carroll who again fired right on with the keeper rushing out of the net, this time hitting the post in the 57th minute.
Â
The Huskies threatened time and again in the second period, finishing with a 10-1 edge in shots during the half.
Â
Bloomsburg finally broke through in the 71st minute.
Allie Camp (Beavertown/Midd-West) shot from the far wing at 10 yards out with the attempt originally saved by Kelly. Kelly could not corral the ball, however, with the rebound leading to a huge scrum in front of the net. It would be Carroll who would take advantage, cleaning up by fighting through the chaos with a shot past the extended keeper for the 1-1 tie and her second goal of the year.
Â
Bloomsburg attempted three more shots before the end of regulation, but the score remained knotted into overtime.
Â
Edinboro put the pressure on early in the extra period, with
Megan Deak (West Islip, NY/West Islip) making a pair of saves in the first overtime including a stop off the tips of her fingertips following a dive, making the attempt bounce away harmlessly following a shot from Becca Costello in the 97th minute.
Â
Michelle Kinka (West Chester/Villa Maria Academy) fired to the right of the net in the 102nd minute as the second overtime began, but the Scots headed back the other way with Debo tallying her fourth score of the season on a shot just outside the box on the far right wing. Her ball shot past the diving keeper into the lower left of the net to send Edinboro home with a victory.
Â
Deak was strong in net, posting eight saves. Kelly earned the win with five saves for Edinboro.
Â
The Huskies return to action with a trip to Mansfield on Saturday night at 7 p.m. as PSAC play continues.
