Women's Basketball Storms Past Cheyney, 88-58, in PSAC East Opener

Box Score (HTML)

CHEYNEY, Pa. – Four players reached double-figure scoring for the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team as the Huskies rolled to an 88-58 victory over Cheyney in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener for both teams on Wednesday evening at Cope Hall.

Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) and Taylor Maldonado (Stroudsburg/Allentown Central Catholic) each tallied 17 points apiece to power the offense for the Huskies (1-1, 1-0 PSAC East). Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) poured in 13 points while Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) netted 10 as part of a well-balanced attack.

Things were tight early as Cheyney trailed by just two at 14-12 with 9:43 to go first half following a jumper from Taschell Phillips. The score remained that way for over a minute before Klunk drained a 3-pointer to begin a 25-10 sprint over the final 8:29 of the opening period to take a 39-22 lead to intermission.

Kia Whitley-Duncan put home a 3-pointer to begin the scoring in the second half, cutting the deficit to 39-25 for Cheyney. It would be as close as the Lady Wolves would get the rest of the way, however, as the Huskies overpowered the hosts.

Bloomsburg did much of its damage inside, outscoring Cheyney by a 42-14 margin in the paint. That allowed the Huskies to get to the line time and again and they took full advantage, connecting on 26 of 31 attempts from the charity stripe.

Hines-Allen and Phillips each had 16 points for Cheyney (0-2, 0-1).

The Huskies forced Cheyney into 20 turnovers that resulted in 31 points of offense.

Bloomsburg returns home to Nelson Field House for a battle with PSAC East rival Shippensburg at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies will honor their 2013-14 Sweet 16 team prior to tipoff.
