Taylor Maldonado (Stroudsburg/Allentown Central Catholic) scored a game-high 19 points and
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) registered a double-double of 12 points and a career-high 14 rebounds to lead the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team to a 64-57 victory over visiting Shippensburg on Saturday afternoon at Nelson Field House.
Â
The win moves the Huskies to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference while Shippensburg is now 1-2, 0-1.
Â
The Raiders led early, opening the game with a 7-2 advantage over the first three minutes. Bloomsburg then roared to an 18-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer from
Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) for a 20-7 lead at the 12:07 mark of the first half.
Â
From there Shippensburg began to chip away, however, and would work itself all the way back for a tie at 27 as the teams went to intermission.
Â
Ford opened the second half scoring by working herself to the line and then sinking both shots for the 29-27 edge. Shippensburg later tied the game at 32-32 on a shot from beyond the arc by Vicky Tumasz, but Sadowski answered on the other end by working inside for a bucket and the 34-32 advantage.
Â
The teams were never separated by more than eight points the rest of the way, but Bloomsburg held the lead for the final 15:50 of game time as the Huskies led for over 33 minutes total.
Â
With the Huskies leading 39-36, a brief 5-0 burst from freshman
Camden Boehner (Gettysburg/Gettysburg Area) gave the hosts some breathing room at 44-36 with just over 10 minutes remaining.
Â
Shippensburg clawed to within a bucket at 46-44 on a pair of free throws from Stephanie Knauer with 6:30 to play, but Boehner gave the Huskies a needed jolt once more by draining a three on the wing on the Huskies next possession.
Â
Lauren Gold brought the Raiders to within 58-55, working through defenders and finishing with one hand off the glass as the clock ticked down to 45 seconds. Maldonado iced the game at the line over the final seconds, however, hitting six consecutive tries from the free throw stripe to end the Raiders rally efforts.
Â
Neither team found much of a rhythm offensively as each squad struggled from the floor – Bloomsburg finished shooting at a 33.9 percent clip (21-for-62) despite creating numerous good looks throughout the afternoon. Shippensburg was held to 35.3 percent shooting, connecting on 18 of 51 field goal attempts.
Â
Bloomsburg won the battle of the boards by a 41-39 margin, led by Sadowski's effort of 14 rebounds – seven each on the offensive and defensive ends. The redshirt junior also matched a career-best of four blocks, a total she has now reached four times in her Huskies career.
Â
Boehner tallied a career-high 10 points, teaming with Maldonado to give the Huskies 29 points off the bench while Shippensburg received just 13. Maldonado added four assists and three steals in 32 minutes. Morgan klunk added eight points and five rebounds with Simmons finishing with seven points, five rebounds and four steals.
Â
Two players found double-figures for the Raiders – Gold finished with 15 points and Knauer registered 12 points along with seven rebounds.
Â
The Huskies return to action on Tuesday evening at Nelson Field House, hosting Edinboro in a re-match of last season's NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship Game. The contest pairing two nationally ranked teams tips off at 5:30 p.m.
