BLOOMSBURG – On a night where neither team could get many shots to fall, the 20th-ranked Bloomsburg University women's basketball team made enough to pull away from No. 11 Edinboro for a 59-49 victory on Tuesday night at Nelson Field House.
Â
The win moves the Huskies to 3-1 overall while the Fighting Scots fall to 3-2. Tuesday's contest was not a mandated Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game and will not count toward conference standings.
Â
The rematch of last year's NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship Game was nothing like last year's tournament meeting as both teams struggled from the floor. Bloomsburg limited Edinboro to just 25 percent shooting during the first half (7-of-28) on Tuesday night, but led by just five at 27-22 at the break with the Huskies connecting on only 10 of 28 field goal attempts.
Â
The teams were separated by no more than five points for the first 10 minutes of the second half, but the Huskies began to pull away with three straight backdoor layups from
Taylor Maldonado (Stroudsburg/Allentown Central Catholic) and
Camden Boehner (Gettysburg/Gettysburg Area) along with stingy defense to stretch the lead to double digits for the first time at 43-32 with 8:17 to play.
Â
Following a timeout, Boehner and Maldonado, the reigning PSAC East Freshman and Athlete of the Week respectively, kept the Huskies roll going with two more easy buckets inside for a 47-32 cushion. A 14-2 Huskies run was punctuated by a bucket in the lane by
Taylor Kaminski (Philadelphia/Archbishop Wood) to give the hosts complete control with a 49-34 advantage and seven minutes to play.
Â
Edinboro attempted a late rally, closing to 53-43 on a 3-pointer from Raven Brown with 3:59 to go, but a free throw from Boehner and a layup off the glass by
Nikki Tamanosky (Camp Hill/Cumberland Valley) made it 56-43.
Â
The Fighting Scots cut the deficit to single digits late on another shot from beyond the arc by Brown to make the score 57-49 with 1:37 remaining, but a steal from
Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) on the next Edinboro possession ended any thoughts of a comeback from the visitors.
Â
Eight different Huskies players worked into the scoring column led by 12 points and nine rebounds from
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights), who also added three blocks. Maldonado finished with 10 points while Boehner chipped in with nine.
Â
Laurel Lindsay led all scorers with 16 points for Edinboro.
Â
Bloomsburg held Edinboro to just 30 percent shooting (15-50) for the game while forcing the defending regional champions into 25 turnovers.
Â
The Huskies dominated inside, scoring 44 of their 59 points in the paint while Edinboro managed only 14 points in the lane. The teams were even on the boards at 38 apiece.
Â
Bloomsburg saw a streak of 191 straight games with at least one 3-pointer come to an end, finishing 0-6 from beyond the arc while Edinboro went 8-17. It is the first time since Jan. 12, 2008 at Slippery Rock that the Huskies did not connect on at least one shot from long range.
Â
Bloomsburg is back in action on Sunday afternoon at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.
