BLOOMSBURG – For the first time this season, the 16th-ranked Bloomsburg University women's basketball team sits atop the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division standings after capturing a 66-58 victory over visiting West Chester on Wednesday evening at Nelson Field House.
With the win the Huskies (21-3, 12-2 PSAC East) extended their winning streak to 14 consecutive games and leapfrogged West Chester (17-8, 12-3 PSAC East), taking a half-game lead in the East while owning the head-to-head tiebreaker following a season sweep of the Golden Rams.
After a back-and-forth start, Bloomsburg grabbed control with an 8-0 run for a 26-18 advantage with 2:54 remaining in the opening half. The Huskies slowly pulled away while holding West Chester without a field goal for nearly 10 minutes before Dallas Ely finally ended the Rams' draught from the floor with a layup at the 1:06 mark to pull within 27-22. The Huskies scored the final four points of the half, capped on a layup from
Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) to take a 31-22 lead to intermission.
Bloomsburg extended its lead to 14 on a 3-pointer from
Catherine Noack (Bethlehem/Liberty) to push the score to 38-24 just over three minutes into the second half. The Huskies maintained control of the game throughout the first portion of the second period, stretching the lead to 12 once more at 51-39 following a perfect in-bounds pass and layup from
Taylor Kaminski (Philadelphia/Archbishop Wood) to
Brianna Dudeck (Sugarloaf/Hazleton) with 9:49 to play.
West Chester began its rally from there, however. The Golden Rams pulled back into the game by causing disruption with their press while also handling the offensive glass. West Chester held a 15-6 edge on the offensive boards during the game and used that advantage to close to 51-48 with 7:23 remaining following a traditional 3-point play from Kendall Benovy.
Free throws from
Erica Maciejewski (Red Lion/Red Lion) made the Bloomsburg lead five (53-48), but a layup from Keisha Steele-Hook and free throws by Ely brought the score to 53-52 with 5:42 to go.
Ford then stemmed the tide by draining a 3-pointer on the next Huskies possession, but Steele-Hook responded with a jumper on the other end to cut the separation to just one possession again. With 4:11 to play, Noack worked free on the perimeter and found the bottom of the net for her sixth 3-pointer of the game and a 59-54 lead.
The score remained the same for nearly two minutes before Ford hit what would prove to be the dagger. With the shot clock expiring, Ford's jumper in the key pushed the lead to 61-54 with just 2:12 left.
West Chester had one last rally, closing to 62-58 with 37 seconds remaining, but
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) worked herself behind the Rams defense for an easy lay-in, effectively putting the game on ice.
Noack connected on 7-of-8 shots from the floor including 6-of-7 from beyond the arc for a game-high 20 points. Ford turned in a stellar performance as well, recording 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Benovy powered the Golden Rams with 19 points and Ely added 15.
Bloomsburg held West Chester to just 31.8 percent shooting (21-of-66) from the floor and 16 points off their PSAC-leading season average of 74.3 points per game entering Wednesday.
The Huskies now control their own destiny in their search for another PSAC East crown with just two regular season games remaining – at Mansfield on Saturday and then a celebration of Senior Day next Wednesday, Feb. 26 vs. Kutztown.
