Softball Team Sweeps Doubleheader from Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV—The Bloomsburg University softball team opened its 2014 season with a sweep of Shepherd University on Saturday beating the Rams, 9-5 and 5-0.
 
In game one the Huskies fell behind 4-0 after one inning, but rallied with six runs in the top of the second. After a fly out to start the inning, Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) walked and Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) doubled putting runners at second and third. Lea Rhem then singled scoring McHale with Holly Peacock (Williamsport/Jersey Shore) singling in Belko to make it 4-2. After a single by Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) loaded the bases, Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) reached on a fielder's choice with Rehm scoring on an error. Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) then doubled home two more runs, while Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) singled home the sixth run of the inning.
 
The Huskies added single runs in the fourth and fifth with Taylor Parker (Dewart/Warrior Run) getting an RBI double in the fourth and Moir an RBI single in the fifth.
 
Shepherd got one run back in the bottom of the fifth with the Huskies scoring the final run of the game in the seventh on Anna McElroy (Jessup/Valley View)'s single.
 
Mandi Black (Huntington Mills/Northwest Area) got the win going five inning and striking out five and walking three with Sarah Bertoni (Nanticoke/Greater Nanticoke Area) getting the save striking out three in two innings. 
 
Baer finished 3-5 in game one with three runs scored.
 
In game two, freshman Taylor Parker (Dewart/Warrior Run) threw a five-hit shutout, while Caitlin O'Connor (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) went 2-2 with four RBI to lead the Huskies to the win.
 
The Huskies got all the runs it would need in the second inning when Parker singled and Belko doubled putting two runners on base for O'Connor who followed with a 3-run homer.
 
Bloomsburg added two insurance runs in the fourth when O'Connor singled home Belko who had doubled. Moir then doubled home O'Connor for a 5-0 lead.
 
Parker finished with six strikeouts and no walks, while Belko was 2-2 with two doubles.
 
The Huskies, 2-0, are scheduled to play at Wilmington (De) on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
