Softball Team Sweeps Pair of Games on Sunday

SALEM, VA—Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) went 6 for 8 and Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) went 5 for 8 on Sunday to lead the Bloomsburg University softball team to wins over Ohio Valley University and West Virginia State. The Huskies beat Ohio Valley, 7-1, and West Virginia State, 8-0, in six innings.
 
Ohio Valley took the early lead in the game getting a one out double off Huskies starter Mallory Tomashik. After a bunt moved the runner to third, the Bobcats got an RBI triple to take a 1-0 lead.
 
The score stayed 1-0 to the bottom of the third when the Huskies tied the game. After Erica Keen (Gordonville/Bishop Shanahan) reached on a fielder's choice she moved to second on a ground out, and took third on McHale's single. Keen then scored when Baer reached on a throwing error by the OVU shortstop.
 
Bloomsburg took the lead in the fifth putting together four hits and taking advantage of an error. Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) led off the inning reaching on an error and moved to second on a single by McHale. Baer then singled home Yanora to make it 2-1 with McHale taking third. After Baer stole second to put runners on second and third, Taylor Parker (Dewart/Warrior Run) singled home both runners for a 4-1 lead.
 
The Huskies added three more runs in the sixth with McHale, Parker and Valerie Carcasses (Barnegat, NJ/Barnegat) all had RBI singles.

In her college debut Tomaschik allowed six hits, one run, struck out four and did not walk a better.
 
In game two Bloomsburg jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) singled home McHale. The Huskies extended their lead to 3-0 when Sarah Bertoni (Nanticoke/Greater Nanticoke Area) doubled and scored on McHale's single and Yanora, who had singled, scored on Baer's double.
 
In the fifth the Huskies made it 4-0 when Parker and Fredell had back-to-back doubles with Fredell getting the RBI.
 
In the bottom of the sixth Bloomsburg put together four hits and took advantage of two errors by the Yellow Jackets to win on the mercy rule, 8-0.
 
Baer finished 3-4 with two RBI, while McHale going 2-4 with an RBI. Parker earned the win in the circle allowing just four hits, while striking out three and walking four.
 
Bloomsburg, 5-1, will play Winston-Salem on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
