Softball Team Wins Pair of Games on Thursday

WINSTON-SALEM, NC—The Bloomsburg University softball team resumed its spring break trip after suffering several days of bad weather and won two and lost one in Winston-Salem, NC. The Huskies beat St. Augustine's, 6-4, and Bluefield State, 11-0 in five innings, and lost to Winston-Salem (WSSU), 3-2.
 
In the day's first game the Huskies fell to the WSSU. Bloomsburg started the scoring with a run in the third when Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) singled, stole second and scored on a single by Taylor Parker (Dewart/Warrior Run).
 
Winston-Salem scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to go up 2-1 and added a single run in the sixth. The Huskies cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the seventh. Sarah Bertoni (Nanticoke/Greater Nanticoke Area) singled to lead off the inning with Valerie Carcasses (Barnegat, NJ/Barnegat) coming in to pinch-run. After a pop out, Caitlin O'Connor (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) doubled scoring Carcasses making it 3-2. Mandi Black (Huntington Mills/Northwest Area) then pinch ran for O'Connor and moved to third on a single by Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone). However, Winston-Salem got a ground out to end the game.
 
Parker took the loss in the circle allowing nine hits and striking out five and walking two.
 
Game two of the day was an 11-0, five inning victory over Bluefield State. Sarah Bertoni (Nanticoke/Greater Nanticoke Area) went 3-3 with the bat and tossed a three-hit shutout to lead the Huskies to the win.
 
The Huskies took a 4-0 lead in the second with Lea Rehm (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) and Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) getting two-run singles in the inning. In the third Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) blasted a three-run homer and Parker had an RBI single to help Bloomsburg go up 9-0.
 
Bertoni got the win striking out six and walking two.
 
In game three of the day the Huskies beat St. Augustine's, 6-4, with Mallory Tomaschik (Catawissa/Southern Columbia) earning the win in the circle.
 
The Huskies took a 2-0 lead in the third when Tomaschik singled to start the inning and moved to second on a walk by Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern). Both runners moved up a base on a passed ball and came around to score on a two-run single by Yanora.
 
In the fourth Bloomsburg added a single run when Moir doubled and came around to score on a wild pitch and a passed ball making it 3-0.
 
St. Augustine's got two back in the top of the fifth to close to within 3-2. But the Huskies came right back and got three runs in the bottom of the frame. O'Connnor had the big hit in the inning getting a two-run single.
 
After St. Augustine's scored twice in the top of the sixth to make it 6-4, Tomaschik retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to get the win.
 
Tomaschik went the distance and struck out eight and did not walk a batter.
 
The Huskies, 7-2, will play at King University of Tennessee on Friday.
