EAST STROUDSBURG—
Sarah Bertoni (Nanticoke/Greater Nanticoke Area) pitched a complete-game six hitter to lead the Bloomsburg University softball team to a 4-2 win in game two of a PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Eastern Division doubleheader on Monday. East Stroudsburg took the opener 3-2 in nine innings.
The doubleheader was the third in four days with five more consecutive days of games facing the team.
GAME TWOThe Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first taking advantage of some wildness from East Stroudsburg starter Rachael Liguori.
Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) got hit by a pitch leading off the game, moved to second on a bunt by
Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) and took third on ground out by
Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone). Yanora then came home on a wild pitch by Liguori.
Bloomsburg made it 2-0 with a run in the top of the fourth. Baer doubled to lead off the inning. After a ground out,
Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) singled to left. Baer originally stopped at third, but came in to score when the left fielder misplayed the ball for an error.
In the circle Bertoni was cruising along giving up just two hits through the first six innings of action.
Bloomsburg got two insurance runs in the top of the seventh, which would turn out to be crucial.
Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) singled to lead off the inning with
Mandi Black (Huntington Mills/Northwest Area) coming in to pinch run.
Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) reached on an error while bunting Black to second. Yanora then singled with Black racing home for the third run. McHale then reached on a fielder's choice with Belko out at third on the play. After a strikeout, Bertoni singled up the middle scoring Yanora and giving Bloomsburg a 4-0 lead.
The Warriors finally got to Bertoni in the bottom of the seventh. Cara McNeil reached on an error leading off the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. Rebecca Smith then singled and went to second on the throw with McNeil holding at third. Amanda McKay then lofted a sacrifice fly to center scoring McNeil with Smith advancing to third. Sierra Wagner then doubled scoring Smith and making it 4-2. After a fly out, the Warriors singled putting runners at first and third. Bertoni, though, got a fly out to end the game.
Bertoni finished the day giving up no earned runs, issued no walks and struck out four. Baer and Moir each had two hits to lead the offense.
GAME ONEBloomsburg banged out 13 hits in the opener, but stranded 11 runners in suffering the loss.
The Huskies again took an early lead in the game getting a run in the top of the first. Yanora led off with a single, but was gunned down at home on a triple by McHale. Baer though followed with a single scoring McHale and making it 1-0.
In the second the Huskie added to their lead when
Taylor Parker (Dewart/Warrior Run) and Fredell both singled with Parker coming around to score on an error by the left fielder.
The Warriors cut the lead to 2-1 with a single run in the third inning. Bloomsburg threatened in the sixth getting two runners on base with one out, but could not score.
East Stroudsburg tied the game in the bottom of the sixth getting a two-out double from Jamie Smith and an RBI single from Cara Woods. In extra innings the Huskies did get two on with two outs in the top of the eighth, but left the runners stranded.
In the bottom of the ninth Smith singled with one out. After
Taylor Parker (Dewart/Warrior Run) got a strikeout for the second out, Amanda McKay hit a fly to center field that was dropped with Smith coming in to score.
Parker suffered the loss in the circle fanning a career-high eight and walking just two and giving up six hits. Offensively five Huskies each had two hits.
Bloomsburg goes to 19-12, 11-7 in the PSAC East. The Huskies host Mansfield on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
