Softball Team Gains Split with Shippensburg on Wednesday

BLOOMSBURG—Sarah Bertoni (Nanticoke/Greater Nanticoke Area) homered and pitched a complete game, while Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) added a three-run blast of her own to lift the Bloomsburg University softball team to an 11-1 five inning win over Shippensburg University in game two of the their doubleheader on Wednesday. The Raiders won the opener, 5-1.
 
GAME TWO
The Raiders got off the early lead in the game when Hillary Lyons reached on an error, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single to center by Maddie Justice in the top of the first inning.
 
Bloomsburg came back and tied the score in the bottom of the second when Bertoni doubled, took third on a bunt and scored on a wild pitch. The Huskies then broke the game open in the third inning by scoring six times.
 
Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) walked to lead off the bottom of the third. Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) then hit a comebacker to the pitcher Liz Parkins who turned and threw late to second putting runners at first and second with no outs. Yanora then stepped up and delivered a long towering shot over the left centerfield fence for a three-run homer and a 4-1 Bloomsburg lead. Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) then beat out a bunt and moved to second on Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone)'s bunt. Bertoni then homered just to the right of dead center field for a 6-1 lead.
 
Taylor Parker (Dewart/Warrior Run) followed with a single down the right field line and moved to third on an error by the right fielder. After a fly out, Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) reached on an error scoring Parker and giving the Huskies a 7-1 lead.
 
Bloomsburg made it 11-1 with four runs in the fourth. McHale and Fredell had RBI singles, while Baer drove in a run with a sacrifice fly with one run scoring on an error.
 
Bertoni won her fifth game of the season in the circle allowing just three hits and striking out two, including the last out of the game. With the bat the junior was 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Yanora was 2-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.
 
GAME ONE
Bloomsburg managed just two hits in the game in falling to the Raiders. Shippensburg pitcher Emily Estep struck out seven and walked just one in the game and at one point retired 11 straight batters.
 
Bloomsburg scored its only run in the bottom of the second inning when Parker walked with out, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Moir's RBI single.
 
From the point on the Huskies managed just a sixth inning single by Yanora.
 
Bloomsburg, 20-13, 12-8 in the PSAC East, plays host to Kutztown on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in a PSAC East doubleheader.
