KUTZTOWN—
Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) homered twice and
Sarah Bertoni (Nanticoke/Greater Nanticoke Area) tossed her second straight complete game to lead the Bloomsburg University softball team to an 11-3, five inning win over Kutztown University and a split of its PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Eastern Division doubleheader on Friday. Kutztown won the opening game 4-3. The split clinched a berth in next week's PSAC playoffs which start on May 1.
GAME ONE--Kutztown 4 Bloomsburg 3The Huskies and Golden Bears were scoreless through the first four innings of the game with Bloomsburg being held hitless. In the top of the fifth the Huskies finally reached Kutztown starter Dominque Ficara.
Sarah Bertoni (Nanticoke/Greater Nanticoke Area) broke up the perfect game by drawing a leadoff walk with
Erica Keen (Gordonville/Bishop Shanahan) coming in to pinch run.
Taylor Parker (Dewart/Warrior Run) then reached on fielder's choice with Keen out at second. After a pop up for out number two,
Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) singled with Parker taking second.
Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) then slammed a triple to the fence in right center with both Parker and Moir coming in to score.
Kutztown rallied in the home half of the sixth inning with two runners on with one out. After both runners moved up on a wild pitch Savannah Nierintz singled to center scoring two runs and moved to second on a fielding error. Marka Ballard then plated Nierintz with a single up the middle making it 3-2 in favor of the Golden Bears.
The Huskies tied the score in seventh when Bertoni homered to left field leading off the inning. Bloomsburg did get the go-ahead run on base when Moir singled with two outs. But the Golden Bears worked out of the jam and went to the bottom of the inning tied at 3-3.
In the bottom of the seventh Rachel Lawes singled to lead off and moved to second on a one-out bunt. Danielle Sienko followed with a single to center scoring Lawes with the winning run.
Belko finished 1-3 with two RBI, while Moir was 2-3 with a run scored.
GAME TWO--Bloomsburg 11 Kutztown 3 (5 in)Bloomsburg wasted no time in getting the early lead when it scored four times in the top of the first inning with the help of two Golden Bear errors. After a line out to start the game,
Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) and Baer reached on back-to-back errors. Bertoni then singled to center driving in McHale with Baer going to third and Bertoni moving to second on the throw. Parker then doubled to right center scoring both runners and making it 3-0. After Parker moved to third on a wild pitch the freshman scored on a sacrifice fly by
Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ).
The Huskies made it 5-0 when Belko homered in the bottom of the second inning. Kutztown cut into the Huskies lead by scoring three times in the third inning off of Bertoni with Sienko getting the big hit, a two-run single. Bloomsburg got one run back in the fourth when Belko hit her second solo homer of the game. The home run was the 33
rd of her career and ties her for fifth on the Huskies all-time list with Marty Laudato (1989-92).
In the fifth inning the Huskies put the game out of reach by scoring five times on five hits and taking advantage of one Kutztown error. Bertoni drove in one run with a single, while Fredell added a two-run single. McHale had a bases loaded walk to force in another run with one scoring on an error.
Bertoni closed out the game five of the final six batters to get her sixth win of the season. Offensively Bertoni, Parker and Fredell each added two RBI.
Bloomsburg goes to 23-14 on the season, 15-9 in the PSAC East. The Huskies will be back in action Saturday hosting West Chester at 12:30 p.m. on Senior Day followed by a Sunday doubleheader at home with Mansfield at 1 p.m.
