Bloomsburg Gets Split with West Chester in Softball

BLOOMSBURG--Taylor Parker (Dewart/Warrior Run) struck out nine and pitched a complete game, while Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) homered to help the Bloomsburg University softball team defeat West Chester University 10-3 in game one of a PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Eastern Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. West Chester defeated Bloomsburg 2-0 in the second game.
 
GAME ONE-- Bloomsburg 10 West Chester 3
The Huskies struck early and often, scoring a run in every inning after the first. In the bottom of the second, Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) reached on a fielder's choice, followed by a single from Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge). Then, Mandi Black (Huntington Mills/Northwest Area) triple to right center, driving in Fredell and Belko, and giving the Huskies a 2-0 lead.
 
Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) singled and advanced to second on a fielder's choice to start the bottom of the third. After that Sarah Bertoni (Nanticoke/Greater Nanticoke Area) reached on a fielder's choice, where McHale scored on an error by the third basemen to give Bloomsburg a 3-0 lead.
 
Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) led off the bottom of the fourth inning with solo home run to put the Huskies up 4-0, later followed by a single from Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) that scored Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) and Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock). The single gave Bloomsburg a 6-0 lead with three innings to play.
 
West Chester scored a run in the top of fifth, before Yanora hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning to push the lead to 8-1.
 
The Golden Rams responded by scoring two more runs off of Taylor Parker (Dewart/Warrior Run) in the top of the sixth to trim the lead to 8-3.
 
The Huskies came back in the bottom of the sixth with two more runs. After back-to-back walks by Sarah Bertoni (Nanticoke/Greater Nanticoke Area) and Parker, Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) doubled to left center, scoring Bertoni and advancing Parker to third. Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) drove in the Huskies' pitcher with a RBI groundout to short. Parker would work a scoreless seventh to end the game.
 
Yanora finished the game 3-4 with a triple, home run and two RBI, while Mandi Black (Huntington Mills/Northwest Area) was 2-4 with two RBI.  Parker allowed eight hits in the game, fanned nine and walked three in earning her team-high 12th win of the season.
 
GAME TWO—West Chester 2 Bloomsburg 0
West Chester scored single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to earn the split and capture the PSAC Eastern Division title.
 
Scoreless into the fifth, the Golden Rams got on the board without a hit. Charlotte Conway walked to lead off the inning, stole second, moved to third on a fly out and scored when Jessica Norris reached on an error.
 
The Huskies threatened in the bottom of the fifth getting runners on first and second with two outs, but a fielder's choice ended the inning.
 
In the seventh West Chester added an insurance run for pitcher Kim Murl. The Golden Rams' Laura Altenburger singled and moved to third on a double, then scored on a passed ball.
 
In the bottom of the seventh the Huskies put the go-ahead run at the plate, but could not score. With one out Belko singled. After a pop up for out number two, Yanora doubled with Belko moving to third. Murl, though, got a fly out to end the game.
 
Mallory Tomaschik (Catawissa/Southern Columbia) suffered the loss giving up just five hits and walking one to go with five strikeouts.
 
Bloomsburg goes to 24-15 on the season, 16-10 in the PSAC East. The Huskies will be back in action on Sunday with doubleheader at home with Mansfield at 1 p.m. With a sweep of Mansfield the Huskies can clinch second place in the PSAC East for the upcoming conference playoffs.
