Huskies End Home Softball Season with Sweep of Mansfield

PSAC PLAYOFF BRACKET
 
BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University softball team clinched the second seed from the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Eastern Division in the upcoming conference playoffs with a sweep of Mansfield on Sunday. The Huskies won the opener, 4-0, and took the nightcap, 3-2.
 
The Huskies will face the number three seed from the PSAC West on Thursday at 11 am in Quakertown. The opponent is still to be determined.
 
GAME ONE-Bloomsburg 4 Mansfield 0
Freshman Taylor Parker (Dewart/Warrior Run) threw a complete game five-hit shutout in the opener for her 13th win of the season.
 
Bloomsburg threatened in the first inning getting runners to second and third with one out, but Mounties pitcher Kate Pratt got an infield pop up and a strikeout to keep the game scoreless.
 
Mansfield put together a threat in the top of the third loading the bases on Parker, but the right hander got a fly out to center field to end the inning.
 
The Huskies finally broke through in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) singled and moved to second on a passed ball. Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) then single with McHale scoring easily for a 1-0 lead.
 
Bloomsburg got two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. With one out McHale reached on an error and moved to second when Baer reached on a fielder's choice. Sarah Bertoni (Nanticoke/Greater Nanticoke Area) then followed with a single scoring McHale for a 2-0 lead. After a pop out, Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) doubled to left scoring Baer for a 3-0 lead.
 
In the bottom of the sixth the Huskies added some insurance when Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) singled and took second on an overthrow. She moved to third on Holly Peacock (Williamsport/Jersey Shore)'s bunt and scored on Yanora's sacrifice fly.
 
In the seventh inning Mansfield did get a runner on via a two-out double, but Parker got a strikeout to end the game.
 
Parker tied her career-high with eight strikeouts, while walking four and giving up the five hits. McHale finished 2-4 with two runs scored to lead the offense.
 
GAME TWO-Bloomsburg 3 Mansfield 2
The Huskies took the early lead in the game scoring twice in the first inning. Yanora walked to lead off the game and went to second on McHale's bunt. Baer then singled with Yanora scoring for a 1-0 lead. Bertoni then walked putting runners at first and second. Moir then singled with Baer racing in to score and giving Bloomsburg a 2-0 lead.
 
Mansfield got a run back in the top of the second. Megan Miller reached on fielder's choice with two outs and moved to second on a wild pitch. Emily Crandell followed with a single scoring Miller and making it a 2-1 game.
 
The Mountaineers tied the game in the fifth. With Bertoni having retired seven straight batters, Miller led off the inning with a long home run to right center making it 2-2. The Mounties would get two more runners on base with one out, but Bertoni got two fly ball outs to keep the game tied.
 
It didn't take long for the Huskies to rally. In the bottom of the fifth McHale tripled to right center and came in to score on Baer's sacrifice fly giving Bloomsburg a 3-2 lead.
 
In the top of the seventh Mansfield had a two-out rally started getting runners to second and third, but Bertoni got pop up to shallow left field to end the game.

Bertoni finished with strikeouts, while walking three and allowing five hits. Moir went 2-3 with two RBI to lead the offense.
 
Bloomsburg is now 26-15, 18-10 in the PSAC East.
