Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) blasted a grand slam in an 11-run ninth inning to help the Bloomsburg University softball team post a 13-3 nine inning win and earn a split of its doubleheader with Millersville University on Wednesday. The Marauders won the opener by a score of 1-0.
Locked in a 2-2 battle going to the ninth the Huskies sent 15 batters to plate getting 10 hits along the way to break open the close game. The inning started with
Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) reaching on an error. After Val Carcasses pinch ran for Fredell,
Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) reached on a bunt single with
Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) following with a single to left scoring Carcasses with the go-ahead run.
Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) reached on a bunt single to load the bases.
Sarah Bertoni (Nanticoke/Greater Nanticoke Area) lined a single up the middle plating Yanora and McHale making it 5-2. After a Millersville pitching change,
Megan Freter (Westminster, MD/Westminster) reached on a fielder's choice with Baer erased at third.
Taylor Parker (Dewart/Warrior Run) then delivered a double to right scoring two runs and making it 6-2.
Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge)'s RBI single made it 7-2, while Carcasses stayed in the game and singled in a run for an 8-2 lead and loading the bases.
McHale then stepped to plate and hit a grand slam to centerfield making it 12-2. The Huskies final run came on an RBI single by Bertoni.
Millersville got one run back in the bottom of the ninth, but it was wasn't nearly enough to overcome the Huskies biggest single-inning outburst of the season.
Bloomsburg got on the board first in the top of the fourth inning when Belko reached on a two-out infield single and moved to second on a single by Fredell and came home on McHale's single down the right field line.
The Marauders tied the game in the bottom of the fourth taking advantage of a Bloomsburg error and went ahead in the bottom of the sixth inning with a run.
In the top of the seventh the Huskies tied the score when Yanora drew a one-out walk. Baer reached on a throwing error, but on the play Yanora was gunned down at the plate trying to tie the game. With Baer taking third on the throw home, Bertoni came back with a single to center scoring Baer with the tying run.
McHale finished the game 4-6 with five RBI, while Bertoni, who transferred from Millersville, was 3-6 with four RBI and also got the win in the circle for the Huskies going the distance striking out three and not allowing a walk. Yanora went 3-4 with an RBI, while Belko was 3-5 with an RBI.
GAME ONEIn game one the Huskies lost 1-0, despite Millersville managing just three hits. The Marauders scored the game's only run in the second inning taking an advantage of two-out error.
Bloomsburg's best scoring threat came in the fifth when Belko singled with one out and moved to third on a single by Fredell. An infield ground out held Belko at third with Fredell taking second. But Millersville pitcher Brianna Andraos got a ground out to end the inning.
The Huskies also had two runners on in the sixth, but the Marauders escaped the jam with another ground out. In the seventh, the Huskies got Belko to second, but a double play ended the game.
Taylor Parker (Dewart/Warrior Run) was the tough luck losing pitcher striking out seven and walking just one.
Bloomsburg goes to 13-10, 5-5 in the PSAC East, while Millersville is 16-16, 6-8 in the PSAC East. The two teams will meet again on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at
Jan Hutchinson Field in the home opener for the Huskies.
