CALIFORNIA, Pa.—
Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) went 2-3 and drove in four runs to lead the Bloomsburg University softball team to a 10-5 win over Winston-Salem State (NC) on Saturday in an elimination game of the NCAA Division II Atlantic 1 Regional Championships on Saturday. The Huskies second game of the day, against California (Pa.), was postponed due to rain and will be played on Sunday at noon at California. The Huskies will need to win three games tomorrow in order to advance to next weekend's Super Regional.
The Huskies actually trailed in the game 4-0 after the Rams put four runs on the board in the bottom of the third inning off starter
Taylor Parker (Dewart/Warrior Run). The Rams scored four times on four hits and took advantage of two wild pitches.
Bloomsburg began its comeback in the top of the fourth inning. Parker walked to leads off and
Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) followed with a single. After
Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) reached on a fielder's choice with Parker out at third on the play, Belko delivered a three-run homer to left making it a 4-3 game.
Winston-Salem got one run back in the bottom of the fourth when Kiah Ruffin singled in a run to make it 5-3. Bloomsburg, though, came back in the top of the fifth and again made it a one-run game.
Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) singled to lead off and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone).
Sarah Bertoni (Nanticoke/Greater Nanticoke Area) then singled home McHale closing the gap to 5-4.
The Huskies took their first lead of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Moir singled leading off with Belko walking to put runners at first and second. The runners were sacrificed to second by
Anna McElroy (Jessup/Valley View), and after a ground out, McHale singled home Moir and Belko giving the Huskies a 6-5 lead.
Bloomsburg broke the game open in the top of the seventh scoring four times on just two hits and taking advantage of two errors by the Rams. Picking up RBI hits in the inning were Parker who doubled home Bertoni who had reached on an error and Belko who drove in Fredell. Also, McElroy singled home Moir, while one other run scored on an error.
Belko finished 2-3 with four RBI and two runs scored, while McHale was 3-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Bertoni picked up the win for the Huskies in relief of Parker. Bertoni went 4 1/3 innings and allowed four hits and struck out four.
Bloomsburg is now 28-18 and will face California, Pa. on Sunday in another elimination game. If the Huskies win they would need to beat West Chester twice to advance.
