CALIFORNIA, PA—A walk-off three run homer brought the Bloomsburg University softball season to an end on Sunday as the Huskies fell to California (Pa.) 5-2 at the NCAA Division II Atlantic 1 Regional Championships. The Huskies finish their season with a record of 28-19.
Both teams threatened early in the game with California putting two runners on base in the bottom of the first and the Huskies getting two on with no outs in the top of the second. But neither team was able to get the key hit keeping the game scoreless.
The Vulcans finally broke through against Huskies starter
Taylor Parker (Dewart/Warrior Run) in the bottom of the third. Natalie Wideman singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on bunt. One out later Shelby Lia sent Wideman home with a double.
Bloomsburg tied the score in the top of the fourth inning when
Sarah Bertoni (Nanticoke/Greater Nanticoke Area) singled and moved to second on a bunt by
Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley). Bertoni then scored on
Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape )'s RBI double.
The Huskies took the lead in the fifth inning scoring one run. With two outs
Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) doubled and then came around to score on
Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone)'s single making it a 2-1 game.
Cal tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning on a leadoff home run by Shelby Heyd setting up the decisive seventh inning.
The Huskies went in order in the top of the frame with the top of the Cal lineup coming to bat in the home half of the seventh.
Wideman flied out to lead off the inning against Parker with Lindsay Reicoff and Breanna Morris following with singles to put two runners on. After a fly out by Lia, Stephanie Ellis homered to right center on a 3-1pitch ending the Huskies season.
Parker finished the game with four strikeouts and two walks, while giving up nine hits. Bertoni was the only Huskies player with more than one hit as the junior banged out two hits.
Cal advances to face West Chester for the Atlantic 1 Region title.
