QUAKERTOWN--The Bloomsburg University softball team was eliminated from the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) championships with a 9-0, 5 inning, loss to Indiana (PA) on Friday at Veteran's Park in Quakertown,
IUP (31-14) got on the board in the first inning against Huskies starter
Sarah Bertoni (Nanticoke/Greater Nanticoke Area). Hannah Mercer singled to lead off, but was erased on a fielder's choice by Christi Mauk. Jasa Mitchell then doubled to right centerfield. Mauk raced around third on the play and was gunned down at the plate on
Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone)'s relay throw from
Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern). Huskies catcher
Anna McElroy (Jessup/Valley View) hung on the ball in the collision at the plate tagging out Mauk. Stefanie McCoy then followed with single scoring Mitchell with the first run giving IUP the 1-0 lead.
The Crimson Hawks broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the second. The big hits in the inning were a three-run homer by Mercer followed two batters later by a Mitchell two-run blast.
In the fourth the Crimson Hawks tacked on three more runs with Mitchell homering for the second time and Allison Vigeurs slamming a two-run shot.
In the circle IUP's Alexa Campbell allowed just three hits and struckout two.
Bloomsburg got hits from
Taylor Parker (Dewart/Warrior Run), Baer and Rachell Fredell.
The Huskies, 27-17, will await word on a possible NCAA playoff berth. The announcement of the teams for the tournament will be on Monday, May 5.
