BOX SCORE (HTML)BLOOMSBURG—It was a wild final 11 minutes of action for the players and fans on Tuesday as the Bloomsburg University women's soccer team battled with Kutztown University at Steph Pettit Stadium with the Golden Bears narrowly hanging on for a 3-2 win.
Â
The Huskies fell behind 3-0 in the first with Kutztown's Diana Malanga scoring three goals in a 12-minute stretch for the visitors. Bloomsburg had a couple of good scoring chances in the opening 45 minutes, both by
Maureen Leis (Erdenheim/Springfield), but Kutztown goalie Deanna Messner made two diving stops of Leis' shots to keep the Huskies scoreless.
Â
In the second of action though the Huskies started to get control of field position were continually pushing the ball forward. The Huskies got off three solid shots, two in a two-minute between the 71st and 73rd minutes, but were still scoreless.
Â
Then in the 80th minute of play
Rachel Yenney (Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley) settled the ball about 40 yards out and let go a high, lofting shot that went over the outstretched arms of Golden Bears goalie Deanna Messner putting the Huskies on the board at 3-1.
Â
Less than three minutes later
Megan Carroll (Middletown/Middletown Area) took a shot to the right corner that Messner made a diving save on. However the keeper could not gather in the miss and left the ball out for
Julia Rios (Millersville/Penn Manor) who drilled home the goal making it a 3-2 game.
Â
In the final three minutes, with the Golden Bears trying to clear the ball from their defensive end, the Huskies continually kept the pressure on and moving forward. Bloomsburg looked like it might be awarded a penalty kick when on a penalty corner there appeared to be a hand ball on a Kutztown player in the box, but a foul was called on the Huskies wiping out the play.
Â
Then in the final 30 seconds of play the Huskies were awarded three corner kicks, and despite bringing goalie
Megan Deak (West Islip, NY/West Islip) to the offensive end, could not get off a shot before the horn sounded.
Â
For Yenney and Rios the goals were their first each of the season. In goal Deak stopped nine shots for the Huskies, while Messner made nine for the Golden Bears.
Â
