Video HighlightsBLOOMSBURG – Senior
Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) powered the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team to its seventh straight win and 20th consecutive victory over a PSAC East opponent with 22 points and 10 rebounds as the Huskies defeated visiting Millersville, 69-47, Wednesday night at Nelson Field House.
Â
It was another fine performance in a season filled with a long list of such stat sheet-filling nights from Simmons, who hit six of 11 shot attempts and went 8-for-8 at the foul line. She also handed out three assists and finished with four steals in 38 minutes of action.
Â
The victory moves the 22nd-ranked Huskies to 14-2 overall and 12-1 in PSAC play while Millersville slumps to 10-9, 7-7.
Â
Millersville, hampered by the loss of leading scorer Carly Gallagher who was lost for the year with injury earlier this month, led in the early going.
Â
Bloomsburg did not trail long, however. Despite losing senior
Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) to an injury just three minutes in, the Huskies quickly responded.
Â
Three-time reigning PSAC East Freshman of the Week
Camden Boehner (Gettysburg/Gettysburg Area) gave Bloomsburg its first lead at 9-7 with a shot from beyond the arc, but Millersville responded for the tie following a jumper from Alexis Martin on the other end at the 15:25 mark.
Â
Boehner worked her way to the line on the next possession and made both ends of a one-and-one for the 11-9 edge.
Â
Bloomsburg never trailed again. After Yasmin Cooper brought the Marauders to within 15-13 with 12:14 left in the half, the Huskies finished the opening stanza on a 25-9 run and went to the break with a 40-22 advantage following a triple from
Taylor Maldonado (Stroudsburg/Allentown Central Catholic).
Â
The Huskies' pressure was too much for Millersville early on as Bloomsburg forced 17 first half turnovers which resulted in 20 points of offense.
Â
Millersville attempted to chip away out of the locker room, closing to 42-28 after Aunjel Van Brakle made one of two at the line.
Â
Maldonado found the bottom of the net for another 3-pointer on the next trip down the floor, and the Huskies were again in business. Bloomsburg led by as many as 23 points at 58-35 following a bucket from Boehner with 8:40 remaining and never looked back.
Â
The Huskies defense stifled another opponent during the second half, limiting Millersville to a mere 23.3 percent from the floor (7-of-30) after halftime. For the game, Millersville finished at 30.4 percent shooting (17-56).
Â
Boehner recorded 12 points off the bench to give the Huskies two players in double-figure scoring. In all, nine Huskies scored with the icing on the victory cake coming on a traditional 3-point play from
Lauren Nealon (Ambler/Archbishop Wood) in the final minute.
Â
Senior
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) added seven rebounds and four blocks for the Huskies.
Â
Martin was the only Millersville player to reach double figures, finishing with 10 points.
Â
Bloomsburg travels to Lock Haven on Saturday with tipoff scheduled for 2 p.m.
Â
GAME NOTES: Sadowski moved into seventh place all-time in Huskies career blocks with 93, moving past Barb Hall's 91 from 1987-90 … Bloomsburg's last setback vs. a PSAC East opponent came on Dec. 7, 2013 at Shippensburg … The Huskies held an opponent under 60 points for the 11th time this season.
