BLOOMSBURG – Though the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team had won seven straight games overall and 20 consecutive contests against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division foes entering Saturday, the Huskies knew they faced a stiff test at Lock Haven against a Lady Eagles team that has traditionally played Bloomsburg tight, especially at home.
Â
Lock Haven again gave the Huskies a scare, but Bloomsburg weathered the storm and pulled through in the final minutes for a 59-53 victory in front of 773 fans at Thomas Fieldhouse.
Â
The 22nd-ranked Huskies (15-2, 13-1 PSAC) led 30-22 at the half after holding Lock Haven to just 22.9 percent shooting from the field during the opening 20 minutes.
Â
The Huskies then stretched to a 37-27 advantage in the opening four minutes of the second half as
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) scored six of the team's first seven points out of intermission.
Â
Lock Haven (6-12, 5-9) clawed all the way back, however, guided by a tremendous performance from senior guard Sami Lane who finished with a game-high 21 points. Lane finally brought the Lady Eagles even with a jumper in the lane for the 46-46 tie with 5:02 remaining.Â
Â
Taylor Maldonado (Stroudsburg/Allentown Central Catholic) gave the Huskies the answer they needed on the other end on the following trip down the floor, banking in a 3-pointer from the right wing for a 49-46 lead with 4:39 to play.
Â
Following a Huskies timeout, Maldonado got a piece of a shot attempt by J.J. Hilliard, and
Erica Maciejewski (Red Lion/Red Lion) delivered a layup for a 51-46 edge.
Â
Bloomsburg led 53-47 following a pair of shots at the line from
Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest), but Lock Haven kept fighting back.
Â
Hilliard posted a fast break layup and then a defensive stop allowed Lane to work her way to the free throw line following a Huskies foul. Lane made both to pull the Lady Eagles within 53-51 with 2:35 to go.
Â
A Lock Haven shooting foul sent Sadowski to the foul stripe and the redshirt junior made one of two to leave the game at a one-possession separation with a 54-51 score and 2:26 on the clock.
Â
The Lady Eagles had two chances on the next trip down the floor, but Kirsti Bair and Hilliard each missed jumpers and Simmons finally pulled down the defensive rebound to end the threat.
Â
A missed free throw gave the ball back to Lock Haven and the Eagles went for the tie on a shot from the perimeter that missed from Emily Daugherty.
Â
On the other end, Maldonado came through in the clutch once again by driving the lane for two and a 56-51 score.
Â
Lock Haven missed another jumper on its ensuing possession, and a foul sent
Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) to the line. The sophomore made both, allowing the Huskies to breathe with a seven-point lead and just 31 seconds remaining.
Â
Playing without senior
Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) who was out due to injury, a pair of seniors stepped up. Maldonado went 7-of-13 from the floor for a team-high 19 points. Simmons delivered her second consecutive double-double effort, finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds in a 40-minute effort.
Â
Sadowski also scored in double figures, registering 13 points along with nine rebounds and five blocks.
Â
Lane hit eight of Lock Haven's 19 field goals on the day and had six rebounds and three steals in addition to her season-high 21 points. Marrysa Moyer paced the Bald Eagles on the glass with 10 rebounds.
Â
Bloomsburg returns to action Wednesday night at home against Cheyney with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside Nelson Field House.
