BLOOMSBURG – Four players scored in double figures as the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team notched an impressive 68-56 victory over visiting California (PA) on Sunday afternoon at Nelson Field House.
In a meeting between nationally ranked teams, the No. 17 Huskies moved to 9-2 overall and 7-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play by handing the No. 23 Vulcans (11-2, 8-1) their first conference defeat of the year. Bloomsburg snaps what was a seven-game winning streak for the Vulcans.
Bloomsburg landed the first blow, opening the game on a 9-1 run before California counterpunched with an 18-4 break to take a 19-13 lead with 6:31 remaining in the first half.
Cal led by as much as seven points during the opening period, taking a 24-17 edge at the 5:17 mark.
Trailing by four (29-25), Bloomsburg finished the half by scoring the final six points of the period. A running one-hander by
Taylor Maldonado (Stroudsburg/Allentown Central Catholic) with three seconds to go gave the hosts a 31-29 advantage at the break despite leading scorer
Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) being limited to just seven minutes because of foul trouble.
The Huskies clamped down defensively after intermission, holding the Vulcans to 27 percent shooting from the floor after halftime (9-for-33).
After the Vulcans scored the first two points of the half for the 31-all tie, Bloomsburg launched a 9-0 run with
Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) adding the exclamation point by rattling home a shot from beyond the arc for a 40-31 edge before the Vulcans finally registered their first field goal over three and a half minutes into the half.
Kaitlynn Fratz brought the visitors to within 49-47 with 9:44 to play following her 3-pointer.
Bloomsburg answered with a bucket inside by Maldonado and the Vulcans would never get any closer. With the Huskies lead at 55-49, Bloomsburg embarked on a 13-4 break by holding Cal to just one bucket from the floor over the final six-plus minutes of play before Paige Wright hit a 3-pointer with just three seconds left and the game already decided.
The Huskies' defensive effort was best summed up by their work on Vulcans senior guard Emma Mahady, who entered the day among the top five PSAC scorers on the year at over 15 points per game. Bloomsburg held Mahady scoreless for the first time since her sophomore year, clamping down on one of the conference's top players.
Offensively, the Huskies spread the wealth.
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) recorded the sixth double-double of her career with a showing of 16 points and 11 rebounds while
Camden Boehner (Gettysburg/Gettysburg Area) and
Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) each registered 13 points apiece. Maldonado also finished with 11 points while handing out four assists.
Cal's Miki Glenn tallied 22 points to lead all scorers.
Bloomsburg enjoyed its best day from the floor this season, shooting at a 52.1 percent clip (25-for-48) while also finishing at 50 percent from long range (6-12).
The Huskies complete PSAC crossover play on Wednesday evening at Slippery Rock with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
