Mia Hopkins (Pittston/Pittston Area) scored 24 points to lead four players in double figures as the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team opened its 2015-16 season with a 76-72, come-from-behind win over New Haven on Friday night. The win avenged a loss last year to the Chargers at the Nelson Field House.
The Huskies trailed 31-16 after one period and 44-32 at halftime, but outscored the Chargers 17-12 in the third and 27-16 in fourth quarter to rally for the victory.
In the early going the Huskies, who feature nine new players on the roster, turned the ball over seven times leading to 12 Charger points. In the opening 10 minutes the home team shot nearly 48 percent from the floor to grab control of the game. New Haven took its biggest lead of the game in the second period going on top 34-16 on a three-pointer to start the quarter. Bloomsburg, though, came back and trimmed the deficit to 12 points by halfitme with
Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) scoring five points in the quarter.
The Huskies further trimmed the New Haven lead in the third period with Hopkins scoring six points and leaving Bloomsburg down just seven going to the fourth.
In the final 10 minutes the Huskies used an 8-0 run to go on top, 67-64, with 2:48 to play. It was a jumper by Hopkins with 4:34 to play that gave Bloomsburg its first lead of the game. Down the stretch Bloomsburg used clutch free throw shooting hitting on seven of eight from the line to pull out the four point win.
Hopkins, a transfer from Monmouth University, hit on 8-16 shots from the floor and was a perfect 8-8 from the foul line. The junior also grabbed 14 rebounds and dished out six assists in the win.
Also hitting double figures was Klunk with 18 points, while
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) had 12 points and eight rebounds with
Alex Ross (Lancaster/Manheim Township) netting a career-high 11 points.
Bloomsburg, 1-0, plays at Goldey-Beacom College on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
