WILMINGTON, Del. – Five players scored in double figures on Tuesday night as the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 71-54 non-conference victory at Goldey-Beacom. The Lightning dropped to 0-3 overall.
Junior
Mia Hopkins (Pittston/Pittston Area) posted her second consecutive double-double to start the season, and to start her Bloomsburg career, after leading the Huskies with a team-high 17 points and ten rebounds. She also paced the squad with three steals and two blocks in the victory.
It took both teams some time to get going as Bloomsburg only led, 8-5, nearly eight minutes into the first quarter. The Huskies would outscore the Lightning by the same 8-5 total over the final two minutes of the period to take a six-point lead into the second. The Huskies started the second quarter on a 10-3 run to take a 26-13 advantage with 6:49 left in the first half. The teams would exchange baskets the remainder of the opening twenty minutes as Bloomsburg took a 32-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Hopkins had nine points at the break while Sadowski and Klunk had seven points apiece.
Goldey-Beacom was able to tighten things up a little in the third quarter, outscoring the Huskies, 18-16, to cut the Bloomsburg lead to 48-39 heading into the final ten minutes. The Lightning would get as close as seven points on a pair of occasions early in the fourth, but an 11-2 run by the Huskies ballooned the lead to 16 with five minutes left. Goldey-Beacom would cut the lead to 11 at 65-54, but Bloomsburg scored the final six points of the night for the final margin.
