StatisticsA LOOK BACK ...The Huskies opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action with a pair of road games at Seton Hill and California (PA) last Saturday and Sunday. Bloomsburg stunned the Griffins, 82-79, with a fourth-quarter comeback for the ages. The Huskies improved to 3-0 lifetime against Seton Hill. Then, on Sunday, Bloomsburg dropped an 80-65 decision at California (PA) for its first loss of the season. The Huskies fell to 9-14 lifetime against the Vulcans.
VS. SETON HILL (11-21) ...Bloomsburg mounted a stunning fourth-quarter rally to open PSAC play on the road with an 82-79 victory at Seton Hill. Trailing 71-58 with 6:56 left in regulation, the Huskies went on a 20-0 run over the next six-and-a-half minutes to take a seven-point lead with 26 seconds left. Bloomsburg got off to a great start, leading 21-14 after the first quarter. But, Seton Hill outscored the Huskies, 50-33, in the second and third quarters to take a ten-point lead to the fourth.
Mia Hopkins (Pittston/Pittston Area) posted her third straight double-double with a season-high 27 points to go along with 11 rebounds.
Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) finished with 15 while
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) had her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 boards.
VS. CALIFORNIA (PA) (11-22) ...Another comeback was not in the cards at California (PA) as the Huskies dropped their first game of the young season - an 80-65 decision against the Vulcans. California led by two, 21-19, after the first quarter but then limited the Huskies to just 13 second-quarter points to take a 42-32 lead at intermission.
Mia Hopkins (Pittston/Pittston Area) rattled off her fourth consecutive double-double to start the season after posting 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) added 16 points while
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) (14) and
Alyssa Mack (Walnutport/Allentown Central Catholic) (11) also registered double figures. Mack hit all three of Bloomsburg's three-pointers in the loss.
LAST MEETING ...Bloomsburg and the University of the Sciences last met on November 30, 2014 with the Huskies escaping Philadelphia with a 71-59 win at the Bobby Morgan Arena. After trailing by three at halftime, Bloomsburg outscored the Devils by a 39-24 margin in the second half for the 12-point victory.
Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) led four Huskies in double figures with 17 points. She also added six rebounds and five assists in the win.
Taylor Kaminski (Philadelphia/Archbishop Wood) added 14 while
Taylor Maldonado (Stroudsburg/Allentown Central Catholic) chipped in with a dozen.
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) posted a double-double after recording 10 points and 13 rebounds. Brianne Traub led the Devils with a game-high 23 points and also pulled down ten rebounds.
SCOUTING THE UNIVERSITY OF THE SCIENCES ...The Devils enter Sunday's contest with a 1-4 overall record and a 1-1 mark in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). They picked up their first victory of the season on Tuesday night with a 49-42 win at Goldey-Beacom. University of the Sciences lost its first four games of the season to Southern Connecticut State (62-53 on November 14), Southern New Hampshire (57-40 on November 15), Philadelphia (46-42 on November 18), and Lincoln (59-53) on November 22. The Devils average just 47.4 points per game on offense and are shooting only 28.5% from the field through the first five games. They allow 53.2 points per contest. Sophomore Sarah Abbonizio leads the Devils by averaging 13.0 points per game. Freshman Alex Thomas averages 11.2 points per game as the duo combines for more than half of the team's points, on average, per contest. Sophomore Laura Trisch pulls down a team-high 7.8 rebounds per game.
HUSKIES UP TO EIGHTH IN ATLANTIC REGION ...Bloomsburg enters the contest ranked eighth in the Atlantic Region according to the latest Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) media poll released on Monday. The Huskies received twenty points in the regional poll, up from the nine points they received last week. West Liberty leads the rankings with four first-place votes and 58 total points. California (PA) is right behind with two first-place nods and 56 total points.
Bloomsburg is also receiving votes in the USA Today Sports Top 25 Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Poll released on Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies received 38 total points in the rankings - third among others receiving votes. Emporia State is tops in the country according to the poll after receiving 20 first-place votes and 593 total points.
The Huskies, however, are not receiving votes in the D2SIDA Media Poll.
DON'T CALL IT A COMEBACK ...Bloomsburg earned a season-opening 76-72 victory at New Haven, the defending East Region Champions, on Friday night, November 13. The Huskies trailed, however, for a majority of the contest, falling behind by as many as 18 points with 9:01 left in the second quarter and still trailed by double digits with 2:38 left in the third quarter before mounting a comeback. The Huskies outscored the Chargers, 27-16, in the fourth quarter to come away with the win.
Then, last Saturday at Seton Hill, the Huskies pulled an even more impressive come-from-behind victory against the Griffins. Trailing 71-58 with 6:56 left in regulation, Bloomsburg scored the next 20 points over the net 6:30 to take a seven-point lead. The Huskies held on from there, 82-79, to post a win the PSAC opener. Bloomsburg outscored Seton Hill, 28-15, in the fourth quarter.
HOPKINS EARNS BACK-TO-BACK PSAC EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARDS ...For the second week in a row, junior
Mia Hopkins (Pittston/Pittston Area) was named the PSAC East Player of the Week for her performance from November 16 to November 23. Hopkins recorded three double-doubles in three games to lift the Huskies to a 2-1 record during the week. For the week, Hopkins scored 60 points (20.0 per game) and pulled down 34 rebounds (11.3 per game). She also had 10 assists (3.3 per game), 10 steals (3.3 per game), and three blocked shots (1.0 per game).
She recorded 17 points and 10 rebounds in a 71-54 win at Goldey-Beacom on November 17. She then opened PSAC play with 27 points and 11 rebounds in the Huskies' come-from-behind 82-79 win at Seton Hill on Saturday. She followed that up with her fourth consecutive double-double to start the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds in the loss at California (PA) on Sunday. The week prior, Hopkins, playing in her first career game at Bloomsburg, scored 24 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and dished out six assists in the Huskies' season-opening victory at New Haven to be named PSAC East Player of the Week on November 16.
MACK NAMED PSAC EAST FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK ...Freshman
Alyssa Mack (Walnutport/Allentown Central Catholic) was named the PSAC East Freshman of the Week for her performance from November 16 to November 23. Mack was Bloomsburg's top rookie performer during the week as she averaged 9.0 points and 3.3 rebounds while also adding two assists and four steals in the three contests. She posted her first collegiate double-digit output with 10 points, three rebounds, and two steals in a win at Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday. She then posted a season-best 11 points, including three triples, and four rebounds in Sunday's loss at California (PA).
DOUBLE-DOUBLE MACHINE ...Junior
Mia Hopkins (Pittston/Pittston Area) could not have asked for a better start to her Bloomsburg University career. In four career games with the Huskies, Hopkins has posted four double-doubles which currently leads the PSAC and is tied for first in the country. Entering Sunday's game, Hopkins is averaging 21.0 points per game (third in PSAC), 12.0 rebounds per game (first in PSAC), 4.0 assists per game (tied for ninth in PSAC), and 3.0 steals per game (first in PSAC). Her stat lines for the first four games:
at New Haven (11/13/15) - 24 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals
at Goldey-Beacom (11/17/15) - 17 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks, 3 steals
at Seton Hill (11/21/15) - 27 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals
at California (PA) (11/22/15) - 16 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals
NO KLUNK-ER HERE ...While Hopkins has been getting much of the spotlight, junior
Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) has put together a fine start to her 2015-16 season. She ranks second on the team in scoring (15.5), fourth on the team in rebounding (5.0), and second on the team in assists (3.5). She is also fourth in the conference in field goal percentage, knocking down 23 of her 39 shot attempts for a 59.0% clip.
ROSS CHIPPING IN ...Junior
Alex Ross (Lancaster/Manheim Township) is taking advantage of a significant increase in playing time through the first four games of the season. After averaging 1.0 point and 1.1 rebounds as a freshman, her game averages improved to 1.2 and 1.7 respectively last season as a sophomore. However, she has started the first four games of the season in 2015-16 and has responded by ranking fourth on the team in scoring at 8.0 points and third on the team in rebounds at 5.3 per contest. She scored a career-high 11 points in the win at New Haven and then tied her career-high with 11 more in the victory at Goldey-Beacom.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE ...The Huskies will return to action with a home conference matchup against East Stroudsburg on Tuesday, December 1. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. Bloomsburg will then host Mercyhurst (December 4) and Gannon (December 5).
