HTML BOX SCOREWEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team had four players in double figures on Wednesday night but it wasn't enough as the Golden Rams of West Chester proved to be rude hosts, knocking off the Huskies, 91-74, at Hollinger Fieldhouse. The loss was the second straight for Bloomsburg as it fell to 6-3 overall and 3-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division. West Chester improved to 7-4 overall and 4-3 in the conference.
Turnovers, which have plagued the Huskies through the early portion of the season, proved to be extremely costly on Wednesday night. Bloomsburg turned the ball over 24 times which led to 38 West Chester points. The Golden Rams turned the ball over 16 times but the Huskies could only generate nine points from those turnovers – the major difference in the outcome.
The Golden Rams jumped out to leads of 12-4 and 17-9 in the first quarter only to watch the Huskies cut the lead to 19-17 after the opening ten minutes.
But, a disastrous second quarter blew the game open and gave the Golden Rams a 50-32 advantage at intermission. West Chester scored 31 second-quarter points and limited the Huskies to15, in the process. The Golden Rams shot 62.5% from the field, knocking down 20 of their 32 shot attempts in the opening twenty minutes.
After the hosts built their biggest lead of the night at 63-39 with 5:08 left in the third quarter, Bloomsburg outscored West Chester 18-8, the rest of the period to cut the lead to 71-57 which made things interesting heading to the final quarter.
However, the Huskies could only cut the lead to 12 late in the final period as the Golden Rams settled for the 17-point victory.
Junior
Mia Hopkins (Pittston/Pittston Area) led four Huskies in double figures with 22 points. However, after starting the season with seven straight double-doubles, Hopkins has now gone two straight with posting one after only pulling down seven rebounds.
Freshman
Julia Gantz (Havertown/Archbishop John Carroll) had her best game in a Bloomsburg uniform, collecting a career-high 18 points on 6-of-11 from the field, 4-of-7 from three-point range, and 2-of-2 at the foul line. She entered the contest averaging 4.5 points per game and only three triples made in 16 attempts over the course of the first eight games.
Junior
Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) (11) and redshirt senior
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) (10) also finished in double figures for the Huskies.
Bloomsburg shot well from the field, making 27-of-54 field goal attempts, and held a 30-28 rebounding margin over the Golden Rams. But, the turnovers, and the points resulting from those turnovers, were the deciding factor.
Dallas Ely led five Golden Rams in double figures with 24 points.
The Huskies will attempt to snap their modest two-game losing streak when they host the Mountaineers of Mansfield University on Saturday, December 19. Tipoff is slated for 3:00 p.m. and will be the second game of a men's and women's doubleheader at Nelson Field House.
