MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – From the start of preseason practice, winning a fifth straight outright Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division title has been the first thing on the list of goals for the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team.
Check one goal off the list as mission accomplished.
The 19th-ranked Huskies (22-3, 19-2 PSAC) made history Saturday afternoon with their 87-59 victory at Millersville's Pucillo Gymnasium, becoming the first team to win five consecutive outright Eastern Division crowns. Bloomsburg is also the only program to win four in a row – the 1988-89 through 1991-92 Huskies squads are the only other squads to accomplish that feat, though this group of Huskies now stand alone in the record books.Â
Bloomsburg pulled away as the first half wound down, powered by a combined 21 points from
Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) and
Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) including a game-high 12 by Klunk as the visitors went to the locker room with a 39-23 advantage.
The Huskies ended all doubt by opening the second half on an 18-1 tear, extending the lead to 30 points.
Millersville (11-16, 8-14) tried to keep things close, cutting to within 21 at 71-50 with 6:19 to play behind success on the perimeter from Shelby Reimer. Â
Following a timeout, the Huskies snuffed out any thoughts of a rally, however, as back-to-back baskets from Simmons and
Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) gave Bloomsburg the momentum back for good.
Simmons led all scorers by finishing with 24 points, her 11th consecutive game of double-figure scoring, going 7-of-12 from the floor.
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) went a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor for 14 points while Ford also registered 14 points. Klunk gave the Huskies four players in double figures, scoring all 12 of her points during the first half and also handed out five assists to lead the team.
For the game, the Huskies shot over 54 percent from the field (33-of-61) while holding Millersville to 39 percent (18-46).
Reimer paced Millersville with 17 points off the bench and Aunjel Van Brakle tallied 13.
Bloomsburg again had a solid day on the glass, outrebounding Millersville by a 31-26 margin and limited the Marauders to only two second chance points on the day.
With the top seed in the East secured, the Huskies will host a PSAC quarterfinal game on Tuesday, March 3 at Nelson Field House following a first round bye.
One more regular season game remains with Bloomsburg hosting Lock Haven on Senior Night Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. inside Nelson Field House.
