Cal U Tournament HeadquartersNCAA ATLANTIC REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME OVERVIEW-Bloomsburg is seeking its first regional championship since 1989, the only regional title in school history to this point. The Huskies defeated Lock Haven, 64-58, in the 1989 NCAA Eastern Regional Championship Game at Nelson Field House. The 1988-89 team was the most successful in program history, as the Huskies opened that year 26-0 and rose to No. 1 in the national rankings.
-This is the first time a PSAC East team has reached the regional final in back-to-back years. The 1989 Huskies are the only PSAC East team to ever win a regional (Shippensburg was in the West 1996, 1998Â and 2001 when winning, as was Lock Haven in 1990). Millersville also lost in the title game in 2000 and 2010. California, meanwhile, is 4-2 in the regional championship game, with all of its appearances coming since 2002.
-Since 1989, the Huskies have reached the regional final three times - in 1998 BU fell to Shippensburg, 91-62, and in 2001 BU also fell in the final moments at Shippensburg, 76-75. Last year, Bloomsburg led the majority of the game before slipping late at Glenville State vs. Edinboro, 82-76.
-The Huskies have reached the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year. Bloomsburg has accomplished that feat just one time previously in school history, reaching the national tournament in four consecutive years from 1989-92.
-Bloomsburg snapped a four-game NCAA Tournament losing streak vs. PSAC opponents in the first round vs. Gannon on Friday. Bloomsburg's last previous win over a PSAC team in NCAAs was in the 2001 second round vs. West Chester, 91-87.
-Bloomsburg is making its 10th trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies are now 10-9 all-time in the NCAA Tournament – 5-5 in the first round; 4-0 in the second round and 1-3 in the regional final. Bloomsburg is 0-1 in the national quarterfinals.
-
Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) leads the Huskies, averaging 15.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 5.0 assists the past two years in the NCAA Tournament (five games).
Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) averages 11.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists in that span;
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) totals 11.0 points and 5.2 rebounds while
Taylor Maldonado (Stroudsburg/Allentown Central Catholic) averages 7.5 points and 2.8 assists in six NCAA Tournament games with Bloomsburg and Florida Southern.
INSIDE THE REGIONAL-Bloomsburg ranks second among Atlantic Regional teams this week, averaging 83.0 ppg through two rounds. California is third at 77.5 ppg.
-Bloomsburg's 19 3-pointers are most in the field (Cal is third with 10).
-California is averaging an Atlantic Region-best 10.5 steals per game through two rounds. The Huskies are second with 17 steals (8.5 spg).
-The Vulcans are last in field goal percentage
defense, allowing Virginia State and West Liberty to combine for 49.5 percent shooting from the floor. Cal, however, leads the field in 3-point percentage defense at 21.7 percent while allowing just five 3-pointers in two games.
-Only West Liberty's Kailee Howe (24.5 ppg) and Shepherd's Gabby Flinchum (20.5 ppg) averaged more points through two rounds than California's Miki Glenn (19.5 ppg).
-
Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) leads all Atlantic Tournament players with six 3-pointers.
LAST TIME OUT> The Huskies moved on in the NCAA Tournament by controlling their second round game against Mountain East Conference member Shepherd, 85-69, on Saturday night.
> Bloomsburg built a 30-point second half lead despite playing for large stretches of time without starters
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) and
Taylor Maldonado (Stroudsburg/Allentown Central Catholic) due to foul trouble.
> For the second straight game, four Huskies scored in double figures -
Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) (22 points),
Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) (16),
Camden Boehner (Gettysburg/Gettysburg Area) (13) and
Taylor Maldonado (Stroudsburg/Allentown Central Catholic) (11).
> Klunk tallied her first career double-double with 16 points and a career high 11 rebounds.
Erica Maciejewski (Red Lion/Red Lion) posted a season-high 10 rebounds.
SCOUTING CALIFORNIA (PA)The Vulcans reached the Atlantic Regional Championship Game with victories over No. 8 Virginia State (86-75) and No. 5 West Liberty (69-64). PSAC Tournament MVP Miki Glenn leads the team in the tournament by averaging 19.5 points through two games while Emma Mahady has recorded 9.0 rebounds in the tournament, third among all players in the region. Glenn's 16 free throws made are second to only Shepherd's Gabby Flinchum (19).
Though the Vulcans can do damage offensively, ranking fourth in the PSAC in scoring during the regular season at 72.9 points per game, Cal can also be stifling defensively – the Vulcans are second only to Bloomsburg in points allowed, surrendering just 59.0 points per game on average. In fact, Cal has allowed 70 points just four times this season – losses to Findlay (74-66 on Nov. 25) and Gannon (71-63 on Jan. 22) and in wins this week - the NCAA First Round (86-75 vs. Virginia State) and the PSAC Championship Game (86-70 vs. West Chester).
Cal is also strong on the boards, picking up an average of 14.5 offensive rebounds on the year, ranking third behind West Chester (16.3) and Gannon (15.2) in the PSAC. Emma Mahady and Seairra Barrett lead the way on the glass with 5.6 and 5.4 rebounds per game on average.
The Vulcans are led by head coach Jess Strom, the PSAC West Coach of the Year in her fourth season at the helm. She was a three-time All- Big Ten selection while a player at Penn State, finishing her career as only one of four Nittany Lions to register 1,000 points and 750 assists in a career. She also ranks among Penn State's all-time leaders with 310 steals and 191 3-pointers.
LAST MEETING / SERIES HISTORY
California leads 12-9These two teams met just over a week ago when the Vulcans defeated Bloomsburg in the PSAC semifinals at BU, 63-48, behind a career high 32 points from senior guard Kaitlynn Fratz. Cal went on to its fifth PSAC championship behind tournament MVP Miki Glenn, a sophomore guard, who averaged 23 points during the conference championship weekend including a career high 30 points in the championship game vs. West Chester. In that game, the Vulcans became the first team to limit Bloomsburg to under 50 points since Millersville did so in 2010.
Bloomsburg won in the regular season meeting between the two squads, 68-56, on Jan. 4 behind a strong second half including runs of 9-0 and 13-4 to erase a seven-point Cal lead during the opening period. Four Huskies scored in double figures led by
Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights)'s double- double of 16 points and 11 rebounds while
Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) and
Camden Boehner (Gettysburg/Gettysburg Area) each tallied 13 points and
Taylor Maldonado (Stroudsburg/Allentown Central Catholic) registered 11. Cal's Miki Glenn led all scorers with 22 points for the Vulcans. A difference for the Huskies was scoring 21 points off Cal turnovers, while also shooting 52 percent from the floor and holding Cal to just under 34 percent.
Bloomsburg had won three in a row over Cal, including a pair of road games in 2011 and 2012. The Huskies have not lost at California since Jan. 7, 2007.Â
