PHILADELPHIA – Senior Julie Falk (Millersville/Penn Manor) scored five times to lead the Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team to an 11-7 victory over non-conference Holy Family at LaSalle University on Thursday afternoon.
The Huskies improve to 1-2 overall with their first win under new head coach Shannon Hertz while Holy Family falls to 2-3.
Holy Family scored first Thursday in a game that was moved due to field conditions on the Tigers' grass surface. Paige Settar found the net just 50 seconds in off an assist from Kacie Booth for the 1-0 lead.
The Huskies tied the score just over five minutes in when Falk scored unassisted and the senior attacker then gave Bloomsburg a 2-1 edge at the 9:03 mark, putting the ball in the net off a free position attempt.
Holy Family tallied another goal from Settar with 2:24 left in the half, but Falk sent Bloomsburg to halftime with a 3-2 advantage after she scored for the third time in the period with 12 seconds to go off a pass from Brigid Kyne (Newtown Square/Marple Newtown).
Patrice Coleman (Media/Penncrest ) opened the second half with a goal off a free position shot just 18 seconds into the period for a 4-2 lead, but Holy Family would tie things up following goals from Settar and Sarah Kelley at the 19:34 mark.
Bloomsburg took control by notching seven of the game's next eight goals, starting with Falk who scored off a free position shot with 17:21 to go. Kyne then scored back-to-back goals, with Holy Family pulling back to a 7-5 score after a goal from Nicole Braungart with 8:53 remaining.
Kyne struck again just 20 seconds later, though, and Falk scored her fifth goal of the game at 6:49 following another free position try. Twenty-three seconds later it was fellow senior Carly Ball (Lansdale/North Penn) who scored off an assist from Taylor Turner (Corning, N.Y./Corning West), and Turner helped put the game on ice by scoring herself unassisted with 2:33 to go for an 11-5 lead.
Holy Family scored twice in the final 64 seconds, but Bloomsburg was firmly in control.
The Huskies outshot Holy Family by a 36-21 margin, including a 22-12 mark during the second half. Â Falk fired 10 of those shot attempts with Marisa Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford) registering nine shots.
Brittney Hegarty (Rochester/Rush Henrietta) picked up the win in the net by making 12 saves.
Bloomsburg is back in action Saturday at West Chester as Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play begins at 3 p.m. in a game that has had its start time pushed back from an originally scheduled 1 p.m. opening draw.Â
