WEST CHESTER, Pa. – A goal from senior Julie Falk (Millersville/Penn Manor) with two seconds remaining sent the Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team to a 7-6 victory at No. 13 West Chester Saturday afternoon in the first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contest of the season.
The win moves the Huskies to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in PSAC play while nationally ranked West Chester falls to 2-2, 0-1.
Saturday's game was tight throughout – the early minutes were a defensive struggle until Brigid Kyne (Newtown Square/Marple Newtown) scored the game's first goal with 6:30 left in the opening period off an assist from Taylor Turner (Corning, N.Y./Corning West).
West Chester's Erin Gallagher tied the score with 3:35 remaining, but the Huskies took a 2-1 lead into halftime when Marisa Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford) found the net unassisted just 44 seconds before the halftime whistle.
Kyne struck again five minutes into the second half for a 3-1 lead and the biggest separation of the day for either side, but late in the half back-to-back goals from Dina Cifelli and Erin Eckert gave the Golden Rams a 6-5 lead and just 4:06 remaining.
Bloomsburg answered, tying the score with 2:24 to go on Moley's third goal of the afternoon. That set the stage for Falk, who scored just two seconds before the final buzzer off a pass from Moley to send the Huskies to a thrilling victory.
Falk's goal marked her 11th of the season and 166th of her career, moving her into a tie for fourth in Huskies history along with Sam Mazzie (2010-13).
Kyne and Moley each scored three times apiece to power the Huskies attack, with Moley also adding two assists. Freshman Brittney Hegarty (Rochester/Rush Henrietta) was outstanding in net, making eight saves to earn the victory.
West Chester held a narrow 18-16 edge in shots while Bloomsburg led 18-14 in ground balls. Morgan Sherriff (Downingtown/Coatesville) paced the Huskies defense with three caused turnovers and Carly Ball (Lansdale/North Penn) notched three draw controls.
Saturday's win marked the second consecutive year the Huskies have upset West Chester while the Rams held a national ranking.
The Huskies are back in action Tuesday at Shippensburg.
