SCOUTING KUTZTOWNKutztown has won its past two games after snapping a three-game losing skid in the regular season finale at East Stroudsburg, 56-41, last Wednesday to secure the No. 4 seed from the Eastern Division. That allowed KU to host Lock Haven in the PSAC first round this past Saturday where the Golden Bears controlled throughout en route to a 74-52 victory. KU opened the game on an 11-2 run and took a 16-point lead to halftime. Lock Haven mounted a 16-4 run out of the intermission to get back into the game, cutting the score to 38-34, but Kutztown responded with a 19-0 run to put the game on ice. Senior Advia Campbell reached 1,000 career points, the 14th player in school history to reach the milestone, by tying her career high of 21 points and hauling in 15 rebounds for her eighth double-double and her third straight overall. Elisa Gaffney (16 points) and Natayla Lee (13 points) were also in double figures. Kutztown limited Lock Haven to a mere 28.8 percent shooting from the floor and forced 21 turnovers.
Kutztown ranks 11th in the PSAC in scoring at 64.4 points per game and also 10th in defense, allowing 63.7 points per contest. The Golden Bears struggle shooting at times, ranking 16th in field goal percentage (37.9%) and 15th from beyond the arc (28.8%). KU does very well on the offensive glass, however, averaging 14.1 offensive rebounds per game - fifth in the PSAC, and is also second in blocks with nearly four per game.
Advia Campbell (11.3 ppg) and Kelsey Watson (10.3 ppg) each average double-figure scoring with Campbell averaging 8.4 rebounds per game and Watson leading the team in offensive rebounds with 64 on the year. Natayla Lee is the only KU player to hit 20 or more 3-pointers on the year, entering Tuesday with 28 baskets from long range this season.
LAST MEETING / SERIES HISTORY
Bloomsburg leads 66-23Bloomsburg swept the season series from Kutztown for the fourth year in a row, but both games were a bit too close for comfort from the Huskies perspective, including a meeting less than two weeks ago at KU's Keystone Arena. Kutztown opened up an 11-point first half lead and took a 34-28 advantage to halftime on its Senior Night including a 22-4 first half advantage in the paint. Bloomsburg senior
Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) kept BU close with 10 first half points and junior
Erica Maciejewski (Red Lion/Red Lion) helped spark a second half rally, scoring 11 points with seven rebounds as two 9-0 runs by the Huskies helped put Bloomsburg in control, taking the lead for good at the 13-minute mark. Ford finished with 15 points while
Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) added 12.
The Huskies have owned the recent series against Kutztown, winning 12 consecutive games dating to January 2011. Kutztown's last win in the series came in the 2010 PSAC Quarterfinals on March 2, 2010 - a 74-67 victory in overtime at Kutztown. Since, Bloomsburg has won 10 of the 12 games against KU by double digits.
Kutztown gave the Huskies a scare in the first game of the year as well, leading 53-48 with 5:50 to play, but freshman
Camden Boehner (Gettysburg/Gettysburg Area) sparked a BU rally. After checking into the game, Boehner hit back-to-back 3-pointers and scored eight straight points as the Huskies pulled away late. Boehner scored a game-high 19 points, going 7-of-13 from the floor. Kelsey Watson paced the Golden Bears with 17 points and eight rebounds.
BU / KU PLAYOFF HISTORYThe Huskies and Golden Bears have met in the PSAC Tournament seven times previously – Bloomsburg owns a 5-2 record in those contests. Bloomsburg's 2013 PSAC Championship run began with an 81-52 win at Nelson Field House over Kutztown in the quarterfinals, taking advantage with a 24-0 run early in the first half. Bloomsburg also won in the 2011 quarterfinals at home, 80-66. Kutztown's last win came at KU, 74-67, in overtime in 2010.
