ERIE – Freshman
Taylor Turner (Corning, N.Y./Corning West) netted a career high four goals and senior
Carly Ball (Lansdale/North Penn) scored three times to power the No. 20 Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team to a 10-8 victory on Friday afternoon at a frigid Gannon University Field.
Â
The win is the fourth in a row for the Huskies who improve to 4-2 on the year and 3-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play. Gannon, meanwhile, falls to 3-5, 0-3.
Â
Gannon got on the board first after over eight scoreless minutes to begin the game, striking on a goal from Illeyana Little for the 1-0 advantage.
Â
Bloomsburg then got on a roll, scoring five unanswered goals, starting with Turner who found the net at the 18:50 mark to get the Huskies on the board. Turner scored again just over a minute later for the 2-1 lead, and netted a third goal with 11:30 to play in the half after
Brigid Kyne (Newtown Square/Marple Newtown) and Ball has also scored in-between.
Â
Gannon made it a 5-3 score after goals from Kaitie Babiarz and Kierstyn Haight, but
Julie Falk (Millersville/Penn Manor) sent the Huskies to halftime with a 6-3 lead with her goal at the 3:31 mark off a free position shot.
Â
Turner scored for the fourth time of the afternoon just over a minute into the second half for a 7-3 cushion, but Gannon rallied to trail by just one at 7-6 with still 25:48 to play following a score from Little.
Â
Ball put the momentum back in the hands of the Huskies, however, scoring off an assist from
Morgan Sherriff (Downingtown/Coatesville) with 23:55 remaining.
Â
Bloomsburg then benefitted from a Gannon own goal when a loose ball rolled through a group of players to the right of the net where a Golden Knights player attempted to pick it up and accidently pushed the ball into the net for a 9-6 Huskies lead.
Â
Allison Campbell (Pottstown/Owen J. Roberts) then found Ball who tallied another hat trick with her third goal of the day and some insurance, stretching the lead to four with 13:20 to play.
Â
From there, the Huskies weathered another Gannon rally. Haight scored with 4:58 on the clock and then quickly tallied another goal with 4:26 to go, but the BU defense held strong in the final minutes.
Â
Huskies goalie
Brittney Hegarty (Rochester/Rush Henrietta) made eight saves in the win, including two in the final minute of play.
Â
Kyne was dominant on the draw, earning five draw controls along with seven ground ball pickups and six caused turnovers in a tremendous all-around performance.
Ashley Nelson (Hatfield/North Penn) also caused three turnovers on defense.
Patrice Coleman (Media/Penncrest ) posted an assist and helped the Huskies in transition with consistently strong cut backs in the midfield.
Â
Bloomsburg will look to keep its hot streak alive by hosting its home opener on Saturday vs. Kutztown at Steph Pettit Stadium. First draw is scheduled for 3 p.m.
