Baseball Drops Doubleheader at Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University baseball team dropped a PSAC East doubleheader at Shippensburg on Friday afternoon by scores of 10-8 and 13-1.

After Friday's play, the Huskies stand 10-16 overall and 9-13 in conference play while Shippensburg improves to 21-19, 14-8.

GAME ONE – Shippensburg 10, Bloomsburg 8  |  Box Score

A opening game slug fest went the way of the Raiders.

Shippensburg grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Huskies tied it in the third when Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) led off the frame with a double down the left field line, moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by Austin Edgette (Exton/Downingtown East). Benson scored the tying run on an RBI ground out from Eric Frain (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan).

The Raiders answered in the home half of the inning with a home run by Jake Kennedy for a 2-1 advantage.

Bloomsburg briefly took control by plating four runs in the fourth. Brady West (Harleysville/North Penn) brought in the first run with a single to left and then Edgette plated a run with his single to left. Frain and Damin Muth (Breinigsville/Parkland) worked bases loaded walks and the Huskies suddenly led, 5-2.

Once again the Raiders responded, chasing Huskies starter Tyler Hill (Lehighton/Lehighton) from the game with four runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth for a 6-5 advantage before reliever Alex Carpenter (South Williamsport/South Williamsport) could put out the fire.

Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) gave the Huskies the lead back in the sixth, blasting a two-run home run to left for the 7-6 advantage.

Unfortunately for Bloomsburg, Shippensburg responded immediately again. This time it was Cody Ezolt who stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and delivered a grand slam to change the game.

Bloomsburg made a valiant rally effort in the seventh. A wild pitch scored a run and the Huskies had the tying run at second when Muth drilled a ball toward third base. Instead of tying the game, Muth's liner was caught by Shippensburg third baseman Nick Spangler to end the threat and the game.

Hill started and went three innings, allowing six runs. Carpenter pitched two clean innings with Jared Schaffer (Perkasie/Pennridge) working two-thirds of a scoreless frame. Cody Heane (McClure/Indian Valley) (2-3) was tagged with the loss after running into trouble in the sixth.

Edgette went 3-for-4 to lead the offense while Ravel was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.

GAME TWO – Shippensburg 13, Bloomsburg 1  |  Box Score

Shippensburg controlled game two from the outset and never looked back.

The Raiders drove in an onslaught of early runs, scoring three times in the first, twice in the second and four times in the third to seize control.

Gabe Mosser (5-1) was also strong on the hill for the Raiders, working five innings of one-run ball on five hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out seven.

Edgette was a bright spot offensively for the Huskies, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Corey Baiada (Harleysville/LaSalle) drove in the only run of the game for BU with an RBI single up the middle in the fourth.

Jimmy Spanos went 4-for-4 with six RBIs to power the Shippensburg offense.

The Huskies and Raiders renew acquaintances on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Danny Litwhiler Field.
