EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Friday afternoon's battle between the Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team and host East Stroudsburg was a nail biter from start to finish with neither team ever fully establishing control. Unfortunately for the Huskies, it was ESU that scored last for a 14-13 victory.
The Huskies drop to 7-5 overall and 6-3 in PSAC play while ESU improves to 7-6, 3-6.
Bloomsburg seized an early 2-0 lead following a pair of goals from Marisa Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford), but the Warriors would run off six consecutive goals for a 6-2 cushion at the 11:39 mark of the first half.
Moley ended the Warriors' run with her third goal of the day to spark a 5-0 Bloomsburg run with Morgan Sherriff (Downingtown/Coatesville) putting the Huskies ahead, 7-6, with still 7:01 to play in the opening period.
After an ESU goal for a 7-7 tie, Taylor Turner (Corning, N.Y./Corning West) briefly gave the Huskies the lead back by scoring with four minutes to go before intermission, but Annastasia Porpora found the net for the home team with 2:51 left to send the teams to halftime in an 8-8 deadlock.
From there the squads were never separated by more than two goals as the pendulum swung back and forth.
East Stroudsburg momentarily took an 11-9 advantage following a goal from Kaitlynn Whitraut with 22:43 remaining, but a three-goal run from Sherriff, Brigid Kyne (Newtown Square/Marple Newtown) and Julie Falk (Millersville/Penn Manor) put Bloomsburg ahead once more, 12-11 with 14:59 showing on the scoreboard.
The Warriors were not deterred, however, vaulting ahead once more on back-to-back goals from Lauren Nunes and Samantha Wienert.
Carly Ball (Lansdale/North Penn) answered for the Huskies, scoring unassisted with 9:39 to play for the 13-13 tie.
East Stroudsburg scored what would be the game-winning goal at the 5:10 mark as Chessie Rahmer found the net for the 14-13 edge.
Bloomsburg threatened to tie multiple times in the waning minutes – Falk had a free position attempt sail wide of the net with 3:09 to play. Then Moley mounted a charge, first firing wide with 2:18 to go and then shot right on with 1:25 remaining, but the effort was saved by ESU goalkeeper Emily Fitzsimmons.
Fitzsimmons made nine saves for the win in net while Abbey Burnett (Frederick, MD/Walkersville) made eight saves for the Huskies.
The duo of Falk and Moley each registered hat tricks with four goals apiece with Falk also winning five draw controls. Rahmer also tallied three goals for ESU.
The teams stayed close in every statistical category – Bloomsburg held a 32-30 edge in shots while each team placed 22 shots on goal. Both teams committed 12 turnovers apiece while ESU held a 15-14 edge in draw controls.
Bloomsburg is right back at it on Saturday, celebrating Senior Day at 1 p.m. at Steph Pettit Stadium. Bloomsburg University will also hold the Steph Pettit Stadium dedication ceremonies during the game as well.
