Huskies Lacrosse Clinches PSAC Tournament Berth Behind Kyne's Six Goals at Millersville

Julie Falk nets 200th career goal in 15-8 win

Box Score (HTML)

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – On an afternoon where the Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team faced a must-win situation in order to continue its season, the Huskies came through with a 15-8 victory at Millersville in the regular season finale to clinch a bid in next week's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Huskies (8-7, 7-5 PSAC) did not entirely control their own destiny entering Saturday – Bloomsburg needed a win and a loss from Slippery Rock in order to move into the postseason as the sixth and final team to gain entry. Slippery Rock fell at unbeaten Lock Haven, 15-3, leaving the two teams tied at 7-5 in the conference standings. Bloomsburg wins the tiebreaker via its 19-12 triumph at home over The Rock on April 4.

With Saturday's results, the Huskies advance to the PSAC Tournament for the ninth straight year and will play at No. 3 West Chester (12-4, 9-3 PSAC) in the first round of the conference playoffs on Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies upset West Chester on the road, 7-6, on March 21.

Millersville (6-11, 3-9) came out strong on its Senior Day, as Sabrina Fusco tallied the first goal of the day unassisted just 88 seconds into the contest.

Tracy Rusen (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) tied the game less than two minutes later with a well-placed free position attempt and Brigid Kyne (Newtown Square/Marple Newtown) put the Huskies up, 2-1, exactly 30 seconds after Rusen's goal with an unassisted score.

Millersville's Hannah Vogel took advantage of a free position attempt for a 2-2 tie, but a stretch of four consecutive goals from the Huskies gave the visitors control. Julie Falk (Millersville/Penn Manor) started the barrage unassisted before Morgan Sherriff (Downingtown/Coatesville) took a pass from Marisa Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford) for a 4-2 lead. Falk and Kyne then scored again, each on free position shots, for a 6-2 cushion.

The Marauders rallied with three unanswered goals to pull within a 6-5 score, however, before Taylor Turner (Corning, N.Y./Corning West) ended the run with a goal on another free position attempt for a 7-5 lead at halftime.

Millersville struck first in the second half on a goal by Bridget Hufnagel at the 27:32 mark for a 7-6 ledger, but the Huskies then went on another run to pull away.

Kyne started the momentum swing with a goal off an assist by Nikki Fisher (Warminster/Gwynedd Mercy Academy ) with 20:22 to play before Sheriff scored again for a 9-6 edge.

From there Kyne took over, scoring twice more off assists from Falk and Moley respectively for an 11-6 lead with 13:52 remaining.

A pair of goals from Millersville's Fusco brought the Marauders within three with 13 minutes left, but Falk and Kyne scored back-to-back goals to end any thoughts of a rally. Turner and Fisher each found the net in the waning minutes to complete the scoring.

Kyne's excellent performance of six goals tied a career high – the sophomore also netted six goals vs. West Chester last season.

Falk scored three times to give her exactly 200 goals for her career with the Huskies, continuing to stretch her own school record. The senior attack now has 292 career points, placing her just two away from the record of 294 set by Georgia Carinci from 2001-04.

The Huskies held a 25-22 margin in shots and 13-12 in draw controls.

Abbey Burnett (Frederick, MD/Walkersville) made seven saves to earn the win in net.

Bloomsburg will seek its fifth PSAC championship as playoffs begin.
